Opinions on exhaust...

Well, here is my dilemma. Hit a piece of something driving through Chicago in rush hour traffic...it was likely a piece of angle iron about eight feet long and bent in an ell, spinning across lanes because its been hit, no way to miss it cause I'm pinned in traffic at about 50mph...hit with the front and rear passenger tire (actually left an imprint in the front tire tread). Didn't think anything of it until our next stop. The piece of whatever must have popped up, and beat the side of the muffler...left a small dent and peeled off one of the heat shield bands. Now I have a rattle, that is likely the muffler as the shield is still tight and doesn't rattle when hit by hand.

So I'm figuring I will just replace the muffler since the rest of the exhaust looks good. I'm looking at a Flowmaster 50 series Big Block with a 3.5 in/out to match the existing pipe. I believe this is the same version Flowmaster sells with the Force II system for this truck. I can swap a muffler for less than $200, while the Flowmaster kit is $650. I'm concerned about drone since this truck tows, hauls, and is used for travel quite a bit. Is the 50 a good choice? I want to stay 3.5" to match the pipe.

Thoughts? Other options? There aren't many options for the newer 2500HDs...especially within reason (the older models, which are nearly the same design, cost less than half of the system for this 2012).

I'd go for a magnaflow. They sound much better than stock, And they have a good tone. There's no cab drone at all. I have it with two 2.5 inch inlets and one 3 inch outlet

No drone go Corsa. I love mine a LOT. The Magnaflow catback I had on my 2012 1500 droned and was quite noisy in the cabin. The Corsa on my HD sounds within a decibel of stock inside cruising and driving around normal. Pricey? Unfortunately, but I sure found it to be worth it. It's almost like having a new Corvette or Camaro with the dual mode exhaust.

Yeah, no Corsa...not interested in spending a fortune on a truck that I have full intention of trading in a couple years. It's got to be simple and cheap...the only thing that turned me from the MagnaFlow is that it isn't offset like the factory? That why I set on the flowmaster.

Borla. Put one of the XR-1 mufflers on my 6.0. Sounds mean as hell when on the throttle.

What do you mean offset?

Inlet/outlet...the MagnaFlow in a 3.5 inch flavor is a round center/center if I remember correctly?

I had a MagnaFlow on my Cummins and it sounded good...

Yeah I like it. It looks real nice, and gives the truck some authority in the sound department. It isn't real loud though and there's no cab drone. I mean you can hear it in the cab but it's not an annoying vibration type sound like my dads 6.0 with a flowmaster has

Good to know, looks like I'm researching MagnaFlow more tonight...which version do you have? Oval or round?

Mines oval....like I said, there's 2 inlets, (I believe 2.5") and 1 outlet (3") it's a pretty skinny muffler maybe only 4" thick or so, but it's longer than any flowmaster I've seen. It's probably a little over 2 feet long.

The stock pipe on the 01 6.0 has 2 inlets and 2 outlets and the 2 pipes go into 1 after the muffler. Completely useless. With the single outlet, that eliminates the extra junction.

Also, magnaflow mufflers are straight through and use packing to reduce sound instead of baffles like flowmaster, which allows for better flow.

My dads 6.0 with the flowmaster is loud at every RPM while my magnaflow is basically stock at idle, you can hear it a little bit at 1500 RPM then it gets completely silent until a little over 2,000 RPM

A shop near me cut the stock muffler out, welded the magnaflow in, and bent the custom single outlet pipe for around $40

See, I'm 3" single at the flange and 3.5" out, so I'm in need of a slightly different version.

They do, but two versions: a 12909 and a 14909, which are technically identical 3.5 in/out and centered/offset, but $50 difference in price. I'm going to need to contact MagnaFlow to see which is which...I bet one is a diesel application.

The 12909 is the one I have....now that you say that I remember. I was looking at the paper it came with last night but it didn't say the series
