have you ever had these wiper probs

Hope someone can help me out. I have a 97 GMC Sierra and I am having trouble with my wipers. It all started out when I was having trouble with my wipers stalling. They would be working and then all of a sudden they would stop. I would hear the motor running and I would have to get out and hit the motor to get them going. I replaced the motor with one from the junk yard and it did the same thing. I then thought it was a ground issue and put a ground from the frame to the body of the motor. It was working but would not go back to its "park" position. I realigned them and now I am having trouble again. I turn on wipers and now they won't shut off until they do it themselves. Does anybody know of this problem?? Please help It is driving me crazy!!

i would be suspect of the replacement motor...it too could suffer from the bad solder that GM used on these circuit boards....the surest way to check out to see if this is your problem is to remove the board from the wiper motor and get it resoldered especially around the connector board side...they give a lot of trouble and for my money, give me a bad solder board and let me reflow the solder and then i have a board that i have faith in....hope this at least serves as food for thought and possibly be the fix for your problem...

There is a recall on this problem that was just recently issued. I am trying to find info. on it myself. Give your local dealer a call.

Yeah...For the 97s...Just take it to a dealer.

They shouldn't charge you for it. Everyone I know (with a 97 Tahoe/Silverado) got a new motor.

My neighbor actually got reimbursed for one he replaced 3 years ago on his wifes 97 Tahoe.

Hey thanks alot for your help guys!!! I went to the recall site and found the info. I took it to my stealer and he confirmed this. I am taking it in on Friday and I hope it fixes the problem. I hope my hair will grow back from pulling it out

I should mention that if anyone had the same problem and had to pay out of pocket for this in the past, then you can get reimbursed, even if your dealer told you before that your vehicle wasn't covered.

There was an old recall back in 98 or so that only covered certain serial numbers. I had a 96 GMC and although some 96's were covered, mine was not, so I had to pay.

This new recall they are doing (actually the letter I received states it is not a recall but extended warranty coverage) covers EVERY unit produced in the specified years. So I was able to get reimbursed. Just in case anyone else is in the same boat.

Thanks to everybody for their help!

I took it to the dealer and it was replaced in about 15mins. Of course it hadn't rained till this morning. So far they work great! But, they stop about 3/4 of the way down the windshield. They don't go back to their original place of rest. Before I go to GM. Does anybody know what I can do to get it back to normal??

It's the wiper control module that they replace. I ended up having my shop do it.

Would I still be able to get reimbursed even if I bought the truck used?

diver76, didn't you say you realigned the wipers when you were fiddlin' with them? Are you sure you don't need to put them back to normal or something? Just an idea.

Bowtie, no, it doesn't matter if your truck is used. At least it didn't matter with me. They just replaced them and didn't even ask if I was the original owner. Just take it in and say "fix it".

I thought about trying to adjust them again from fiddling with them the first time. It turns out I had a dead spot in the little board inside. There is a little circular board inside with metal pathways on it (sorry for the half**s description.) This is where the two contactors travel on and they tell the wipers where to stop and start. I had a dead spot on this and it of course told my wipers to stop at the wrong spot. Which was half way up my windshield.

I phoned my cousin who works in a scrap yard and got a next to new one for free.
