97 Tahoe rear bumper

A couple years ago I had my roof and hood repainted - The original paint crazed and came off, and it started to rust. My rear bumper was also rusting out, so I had them replace it.

The shop claimed it was a new bumper. I thought it interesting that he was able to get a 'new' bumper for a 17 (at the time) year old truck.

I'm not sure where he got it from, but I don't think it is OEM, as it is starting to rust out after only 2 years. The entire bumper has rust spots showing through the chrome.

I'm guessing it will need replacing again before too long. Is there a source for OEM quality bumpers?

LMC

and ebay.

rust on the bumper chrime .. check for shorts in tail lamp, third brake, and electric brake if one is installed. there is a ground left side rear.

the chrome is nothing...

but stuff does catch up to where they mount to frame. As long as that is good, you should get through your locales inspections (if you have one)

The silliest error for the bumper is a receiver hitch that creates a bimetal battle. As if to try and own the bumper just by sitting there. That is also juice related...but we can't just unhook everything can we. :)

My best guess is it is a rechromed bumper that wasn't properly prepped. There is rust under the chrome over pretty much the entire surface. Kind of irritates me, I probably should have just kept the original even though I had a hole starting in the corner to the right of the license plate.

I've been able to keep the rest of it clean. I fixed some rust spots that we're starting in the wheel wells. The biggest concern right now is the bottom inside edge of the tailgate is rusting. Fixing that will require removing it and taking it apart.

my uncle had a simular issue with his hood on his 1 ton. hit a deer so instead of fixing the old one he bought a cheap replacement, 2 years later it started rusting above the grille and a month or so he went to lift it and it folded right up the center. i always buy original parts on part-outs or at junkyards then i can.
