I thought the helper springs don't engage until loaded... Why would that alert the ride?

I would think that would depend on the spring...progressive types only work when loaded.

In the OP's situation, where they are loaded all the time, non-progressive helper springs would be the ticket had they had went that route. Non-progressive springs would maintain ride height better since they are engaged to the main pack all the time from zero deflection to full deflect.

For those of us just hauling occasionally, progressive springs are the better answer. But you would have a touch more sag since the springs would need to be deflected slightly to start engaging the helpers.
