Intermittent electric power steering

I have a 2016 Silverado 1500 crew bought 8weeks ago 1400 miles. This past Wednesday afternoon on my way to work I lost my power steering ( this truck is a bear to steer without power ). At 10 pm I start up the truck and the power steering works fine. I went to my dealer when he opened and they had nobody available to see if it set a code. Friday morning on the way home from work the power steering goes out again. I only had to make 3 turns to get home so I drove it home called Roadside and had it towed in. I called service at 5:30pm they are too busy nobody to look at it until Monday. Anybody else having problems with their electric steering?

Yes, mine did the same thing. Are you getting the DIC message when it goes out? They had to change my electric steering box, or something like that. Been fine since then.

Sorry for the delay just finished 19 days straight of 12 hour shifts, finally got a day off. So my truck got towed in naturally the power steering worked when it got to the dealer. I let the service writer drive it home and it happened to him a few blocks from his house. The next morning the steering worked and he drove back to the dealer. They got a code C056D. They called TACK told to replace power steering module asm. part # 23361176 motor kit. So the module must have included the motor. I have put about 200 miles on it since the repair no problems.

I don't know if I would have bought this truck knowing it had electric steering, it is very hard to steering when it goes out. I used to repair large aircraft fuel trucks and this pickup was harder to steer when it went bad.

This just happened to my 2015 Sierra Denali yesterday. 6 hours from home in the North Maine Woods and I got the, "Service Power Steering Drive With Care" message on the DIC after coming over a rise.

We went down a few puddled roads hunting that day, but nothing like the other posts I've read about car washes and other issues that would have caused a short. I can tell you, trying to turn past 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock was nearly impossible. 2 hours on dirt roads, followed by 3.5 on the highway (not bad) and about a 1/2 hour making 90 degree corners was more than I wanted. To make a regular turn at a light or stop sign, I'd have to arch way over to make the corner and if I didn't plan for the corner ahead of time, it was nearly up on the curb for me. I remember lack of power steering in older vehicles and I'd agree with the above, this is way worse than that. I'm a decent sized guy, but my guess is many folks would need to park it and get towed. I didn't have that option yesterday trying to get home.

They are keeping it overnight at the dealer, as it is not communicating properly with something...after I heard, "rental car" I zoned out on the phone...

Tomorrow will be the third day in the shop. They said they took out the power steering module and it was full of water. He asked if I crossed any streams with my truck over the weekend. I hit a few big puddles, but nothing I didn't run through in the past and certainly nothing a truck wouldn't be able to handle. All covered with my extended warranty, but I'm still bummed. This truck seems to have a few bugs in it. I'll post a more technical response tomorrow.
