Tuned trucks and Warranty issues

So yall might like this

I found this Edelbrock super charger system yesterday.

The coolest thing about it is they offer a 3 year 36000 mile warranty on your powertrain with their system.

I believe it's 3 years off the trucks build date

It's also 36k miles since new.

 

But it's certainly a good sign that they are confident in the system

No, while I'm no tuner, I know enough about ICE theory and transmissions to know a good conservative tune will have zero decrease in durability.

 

It may make the vehicle less idiot proof, but that's not something a car guy needs to worry about

GM tunes these things to meet EPA standards....any plus of parts lasting is a bonus.

 

That Edelbrock warranty is only good if you have a authorized installer doing the work. Which at that time you're probably $3k or more in the hole, with the additional cost (retail vs. buying from drop shipper, transport if don't have authorized installer close by) of the kit and labor. Would rather put that towards whatever parts I broke.

I am a car guy, have been since 1971 when I turned my first ignition key, and I want my DD truck to be reliable and not a money pit, that way I can put my money into my toys, the Montes and the Camaro vert.

GM has to tune the engines for a huge spectrum- they need to meet all kinds of internal targets for abuse, running crappy gas, neglected maintenance, emissions levels and countless other things. They leave a lot on the table in the name of these targets. I have no means to prove it but I firmly feel that cleaning up the sloppy, slow shifting to be a bit firm will actually increase the longevity of the transmission. Those slow, smooth shifts come at the cost of friction and heat. Granted the new 5.3 doesn't have a huge history yet but the six speed has proven to be pretty reliable.

AGREED. I was just talking to my father in law a couple of days ago about how much the EPA restrictions rob these trucks of their potential.

So I was talking to someone with DiabloSport yesterday and they said that their tunes are undetectable by the dealer and they haven't had any warranty issues with their tunes either.

My buddy had cold air intake, changed exhuast and running a custom bama tune. He was having detonation issues in #8 due to the tune. I'm still not sure all the details but when this happened he put stock intake back on and removed the tune. And they replaced his engine. This was last year. He has no special relationship at the dealer. When I bought my 16 I had no worries tuning. And this is not someone I just know about he is a close friend. I drove him home from the dealer. So either gm didn't know or care.

No you know what... even if I didn't know this happened I would still tune. I'm not going to drive a truck for 3 or 4 years that runs like a piece of shit because of a warranty. I hated my truck before my mods but damn I love it now. It looks badass sounds badass and runs badass

 

And I'm just running an 87 octane custom tune. I don't race I drive drive like an idiot so I'm talking realistic everyday average driving. But you can't imagine if you haven't seen how much better in daily driving these trucks perform tuned. Not to mention 3 mpg better and yes that's with v4 turned off. If I run with v4 on I get nearly 4 mpg better on highway.

 

I'm not saying everyone should tune I'm just saying I should. Even if I had to pay for my own repairs. I still feel the same

I wouldn't buy a vehicle for 40 - 50k that I felt I had to tune vefore I could drive it.

These trucks don't need to be tuned to be driven, 99% of people are happy as soon as they pull off the lot.

 

If you modify your truck though, in most cases you'll want to tune to take full advantage of those modifications.
