The new generation engines are amazing, I miss that about my old '14 sillvy LTZ. That truck just plain ripped

rocnrol do you have a gas HD or a diesel?

Why don't they use the 6.2 for the gas motor as apposed to the 6.0?

Jon, I have the gas HD. The easy answer is that the 6.0 is a rock! The addition of the VVT made the engine just that much better. I have no doubt that GM is working on something new for the gas HD, but I really couldn't guess as to what direction their going to go. They have so many successful platforms to work from, the 7.4, 8.1, 6.0, 6.2...

Yep.

My last truck was a 1995 K2500, before they were called "Silverados" or "Sierras". It had the legendary 454ci V8. That's 7.4L displacement.

My new 2016 Sierra 1500 with the 4.3L V6 has the same "seat of the pants" feeling on E85 that the old K2500 did... With half the engine size and double the fuel economy.

It's mostly that engine technology has come a long way in the past few years, but the transmission also plays a part in this. Your 2011 (and my '95) had clunky old 4-speeds. The current gen trucks have 6-speed or 8-speed transmissions depending on which model you buy, which allows the engine to more efficiently deliver power across a wider range of situations.

My previous truck was a 6 speed as well. You are correct that the transmission plays a significant role. I think adding the 8 speed to the 4.3 would be an excellent power combination!

Mine is a 6spd. Personally I prefer the 4spds. Pretty much all trucks I have driven from mine to the 2017 loaner are mushy shifty and that's the worst part of it. Another gripe with 6 gears (or 8) is downshifting with the throttle pedal. It's hard for me to get to the right gear. At constant 50mph my truck is in 6th. If I push a little it goes to 5th, more to 4th, really if im looking to speed up quickly, I want third and I find it hard and annoying to get it to select the right gear. WHen the truck was newer I made the mistake of pushing WOT and that is a mistake as it will shift to 2nd and way to high rpms.

The loaner cured a lot of my gripe. NOT by shifting, that was sloppy and unpredicatable still, but by pure torque. It didn't matter if it went to 4th from 6th when I really wanted third, because 4th still provided enough torque to move the truck accordingly.

Maybe I have the rose colored glasses, but my 2wd 97 Vortec 350 with the 4spd was my favorite truck to date to drive. THe numbers are way under the modern numbers, but the torque was there and I always knew what gear I was going to get. It felt like an extension to my body driving that truck vs the new ones feel more like a partnership. OK, off my soap box haha

Would I feel any more power putting E85 in my current truck? (If I could find it?)

I think the trucks have the same gearing. I got mine back today . I checked rpm at 30mph in 2nd gear and they were the same.

Depends on if it has the E85 tuning package (and the alcohol sensor)

RPO code is FHS. It became optional on 5.3's in 2015. On 2016/17's it is available on 6 speed 5.3's but not 8 speed.

I have the Flexfuel E85 badge on the back, so I guess I have it? The nearest station that sells it though is about 10 miles away. I'll wait until I'm empty and near and give it a whirl, I'll report back.
