Oil & Cabin Filter Questions

I posted this over @ the BOB Is The Oil Guy, but didn't get a definitive answer:

I was looking @ the owners manual of my brother's 2016 Sierra 2500HD and saw that the 5.3 motor uses a PF63 (long) filter while the 6L motor uses the PF48 (long) filter. Has anyone ever got an explanation for this? Several years ago the LS1s in trucks (my 2004 2500HD) used a long filter which was superceded by a short filter. My 2011 2500HD's OEM filter was short as well. Now they've gone back to 2 different sized filters, w/ the 6.0L using a short filter.

Does anyone know why this is the case?

My 2000 had a cabin air filter but I don't think the '04 had 1. I definitely know the '11 didn't have a serviceable filter. Now the K2XX trucks have a serviceable filter any reason why?

That being said, I always checked it during an oil change & there usually was some debris & dead insects in the housing. This past summer a friend was servicing a GMT900 1/2 ton that was owned by a construction company. They were complaining about driveability issues. He checking the air filter & the interior of the housing was like a sandbox. It looked like it had never been looked at. I asked hi, "I wonder what the cabin filter looks like?" He gave me a dirty look & said, "Well thanks to GM it's sealed!".

I am confused with all this? Anyway, GM has gone with serviceable cabin air filters then they went with non-serviceable. They have done this with cars too. Not sure why maybe contracts, money etc......The new models 14-and up use Micron Air p/n 23281440 and is super easy to change! I like that you can change them out because if you use your truck as a work truck and INHALE DUST ALL DAY after 20,000 miles it''s shot and needs to be serviceable!

If your engines air filter can be replaced when it gets cruddy, why not the cabin filter? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Cabin filter keeps all the crud out of the blower motor and air box. 2003-2013 pickups and 2003-2014 SUVs never had them (cost cutting). They now have a retrofit kit for 2007-2014 trucks. How convenient.

As for the oil filter, just run the OE sized one. No added benefit to the PF-63. For fitration demands I assume, as well as higher system capacity, required the 4.3, 5.3 and 6.2 to go to the PF63 filter, where the LS only need the PF48 to meet demands. The Gen V small blocks have some critical oil based systems on them, and on the V8 applications, hold 8 quarts of 0w20 in trucks. Revised AFM and VVT over Gen 4, plus some potential for fuel dilution from the DI.

My choice is the UPF-48R from ACDelco if you are changing your own oil. There is also the PF-48E which is what your dealer would use if they use AC Delco filters.
