Chance to buy a 6.2 engine cheap.

I work at a repair shop and we recently had a 2010 Escalade come in with the 6.2 with afm. The truck was ran low on oil and had a bad tick.. I think it was a bad lifter or maybe multiple lifters. Long story short, the customer bought a brand new crate 6.2 and I have the option of buying his old 6.2 for the price of the core - $600. I have a 2009 Sierra Denali (6.2 no afm) and it has the cold start piston slap which drives me nuts.

 

My previous truck was an 08 5.3 with the afm which failed and I had to replace the lifters, etc. I believe this 6.2 engine that I can buy sounded the exact same way my 5.3 did when the afm failed and I lost a couple lifters. Here's my question.. is it worth it to buy this engine for $600 and rebuild it? I did all the work myself on my 5.3 and it was a fairly simple job & I can get all parts @ cost. I just keep thinking about how much the piston slap bugs me in my denali and I'm seriously considering buying this 6.2 for $600, doing pistons and top end and having it as a spare in case the piston slap continues to get worse in my denali.

 

I know the '10 has the afm and my '09 doesnt.. I've found afm delete kits, just wondering if this is all worth it or not? I'd probably end up doing pistons, cam, afm delete so I could drop it into my 09 Sierra denali. Thoughts, concerns, tips??

I'd get it. Even if you end up not swapping it into your Denali, you can put it into something else later on down the road

So your thinking is that there is NO major damage to the bottom end on this engine? If this were a super low mileage 2010 6.2 and I had a way to sell the core back after teardown and check then yes I might be tempted to do a teardown and check the bearing journals etc. If you are not careful you will end up with a LOT of money in parts and a whole bunch of hours invested............probably just be a basket case that sits in the corner of your workshop for years. Do not ask me how I know chit like this....

Put the $600 towards a new motor if you plan on keeping the Denali.
