HID Upgrade w/ DRL's

Hey all. I just bought an HID kit from Xenon Depot for my '16 2500 HD. It's an LT so it has the crappy ass halogens that also function as the DRL's.

Now I don't have anything against DRL's but my HID kit says I need to have them deactivated. I've called the dealer near me and they're telling me they won't do it for 'legal' reasons, although they won't give me anything in writing that says they can't do it. I also called the dealer I bought the truck from and they said they're not sure they can do it either.

Does anybody know of a way to do this without going through a dealer?? Anyone around Acworth, GA that can help me out??

Thanks,

Will

Or do folks just run these with the HID's running as the DRL's?? Can I just do that or will it hurt something? I'm guessing at the very least that it would shorten the life I would get out of the HID bulbs just like halogens.

From what I'm reading on xenondepot's website they will likely run at full power even with the lower voltage signal being sent to the ballasts as they will simply steady the voltage to the HID bulbs. Obviously not an ideal state to drive around in.

Surprised I haven't heard from anyone. Hoping the dealer I bought it from gets back to me with good news tomorrow.

Here's a couple pics of the finished product. Apologies for the sweatshirt hanging over the grill. [emoji1]

Okay. So I just got a diagnostics email from OnStar stating that one or more of my headlights may have malfunctioned. I purchased the CANBUS things that I thought were supposed to prevent this.

Any thoughts??

I didn't have the dealer change anything on mine. I put in Non-CANBUS bulbs, but I also added in warning cancellers which can be had for ~$15 on ebay or something. Mine now run without a DRL at all. they only come on if the headlight's getting full power

See mine just run all the time. The voltage to my capacitors is obviously high enough that they feel it appropriate to turn the HIDs on.

My hids are my drls so I'd run em and I've had no issues

How long have you been running them like this?

Nope mine was retrofit source 6000k plug and play kit had everything and no pulled fuses and the truck has 22k on it no issues at all

Don't you just pull the DRL fuse out??

Apparently GM decided to do away with the fuse and run the DRLs through the BCM. Can't just hank a fuse anymore. [emoji35]

i didn't pull any fuses out either, mine just don't go on until the actual lights do. If I'm correct, DRL run your headlights at a lower voltage than your true headlights, so mine just don't get enough power to turn the ballast on to run the lights in general until it's at full power.

Looks great! I used xenon depot on my 2002 2500 HD and they worked great.

I bought a 2015 2500HD this past August. Was to scared to mess with a new truck so had a shop install some nice HID's. I was all stressed over the CanBus issue. Turns out they just installed them like normal and they've worked ever since. My DRL's are actually my regular low beams and come on every time I start the truck unless I manually turn them off.

One problem I'm having that I don't see in your pics is the ground wire shadow. Do you know what I mean by that? It's the "electrode" that runs the length of the HID bulb showing in the light pattern on the road at night and it's bothered me since August.

I've been reading online just as recently as yesterday and have seen lots of other people that install them aftermarket in many types of vehicles complain of the same issue. The answer is that the "electrode" or the "return wire" should always be positioned in the down position because when it get reflected the shadow would go up rather than down towards the street. make sense?

It's not as eays as installing it that way though. In most cases you have to trim the plastic tabs down in order to install the bulb the other way or trim the base to create a new tab so it installs properly. I emailed the shop and they are going to see if it's something they can do. Sure hope they can help me.

Is that what you did or what? Your light pattern is clean and without those ugly straight shadows in the pattern.

I'll post pics of mine so you can see.

1st pic is the reflection on a piece of cardboard about a foot in front of light. You can see the shadow of the "electrode" on the HID light.

2nd pic is what the light look like while looking at the lens of the headlight assembly.

3rd pic are the shadows circled on the road. It worse in person though.

4th pic are shadows without being circled.

If I have this line at all it's up, not down on mine.

I did not do anything special to install mine, they are in just as intended. However they are side specific left vs. right, so if your shop installed them backwards this could be why you're having an issue.

Here's a pic of mine. You can kind of see that same line at the top of the 1st image.
