04 Yukon speedometer

The speedometer doesn't work in our 04 Yukon. The cluster has been repaired and tested but it doesn't register speed or mileage.

If I plug a scanner into the OBD port it will read the speed when driving.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue might be? It's driving my wife crazy without the speedo working.

VSS circuit from PCM to cluster if I had to take a blind bet.

Aftermarket alarm or radio?

Trans shifts fine and no check eng light?

I had something similar happen to my '05 Suburban. This was many years ago so I hope I remember this correctly. It turns out that it was the stepmotor and was replaced at no cost to us. It turns out it was a known problem and I think ) a class-action suit was filed which got us our free repair.

It has an aftermarket alarm/remote start but this problem happened years after that was installed.

What is the VSS circuit?

It shifts fine, drives fine and no check engine light. Once in a while it has an issue with the evap canister and throws a code and check engine, but that is the only time it is lit.

All other gauges work. No speed and no odometer.

As mentioned the cluster was completely rebuilt and tested by a company that repairs them.

Spartan, I just looked up what the VSS is.... feel dumb now.

If that were the issue, why can I see the vehicle speed with a scan tool plugged into the OBD port? Wouldn't that not show the speed too?

No light and no fault codes for that system. I've been thinking it's a wire issue, maybe a mouse was hungry and had a little taste.

Check the pins where the IPC plugs in behind the dash , make sure none of the males are bent, and check the drag on the female side with an appropriately sized paper clip. The VSS circut is pin#50 drk grn wire. What bothers me is you said the odometer doesn't work ? Is the display dark ? or does it show, but doesn't count up ? The odometer is only a display. The BCM holds all that info. If you see miles that don't move you may have a body module issue ?

The display is fine, it is not counting mileage and the speedometer doesn't work.

The whole cluster was sent out and repaired as I thought it was a stepper motor problem. When it was returned and I reinstalled it, it has the same issues.

The odometer not counting seems to puzzle everyone I talk to as that is not a typical problem with these trucks and/or clusters.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

The BCM does not store any info on mileage. The only place mileage is stored in a 99 up truck is in the speedometer itself.

I would check for signal on the VSS circuit at the speedometer head if that jumper it from the PCM to the speedometer head to test.

My 2¢ since I repair this problem all the time. It's a cold solder on one of the 4 1200Ω resistors just below the main connector. Don't remember which one since I redo all of them when I repair a cluster. I could trace it if you want to know exactly which one but re-flow them all and the other 3 gauges will love you for it.

It could have been intermittent and working at the time of testing. If your OBDII controller reads a speed so should your cluster. Best way to know for sure is swap cluster with an other.
