Looking to recalibrate speedometer...

Recommended Posts

Just got new (bigger) tires put on my 2015 2500hd 6.0. I know my speedometer and mpg computer calculator are off. I would really like to fix that so I don't have to remember I'm going 70 not 64 or 65 like the truck says. There has to be a tuner or something similar that will correct this???

I went from 245/75/17 to 295/60/20. I haven't done the GPS trick to check my actual speed vs what the speedometer says but I know it has to be off pretty good.

The Hypertech 2.0 that I bought recently has the tire size adjustment capability and as I remember the other 4 or 5 different brands of hand held tuners that I was looking at on the internet when deciding what to buy had the tire size setting option also. I was mainly interested in being able to set the AFM to only come on above a certain speed (presently 50mph) but I could slam some oversized Nitto's on at anytime and need those setting available LOL

I used Blackbear Performance on my '14 and couldn't have been happier, I have already scheduled my '16 for their tune when they come back to Texas in March. He can tune the ECM, TCM, and recalibrate whatever you need and can send you updated tunes as needed when you add anything else by email. I'm currently sorting what I want in the area of tire size and or lift and exhaust/intake mods prior to early March. Definitely worth the $ IMHO. Great guy and ultimate customer service.

I'll have to check that out, I'm new to the whole tuning thing, what is AFM?

I love the thought of a custom tune as my 2500hd is my daily driver but I also use it for work to pull my landscape equipment when need be.

You might email them, they can tune for what you want to do with your truck. The best you know is the best you have experienced. They have definitely made a believer out of me.

You've got a few options:

1. Have the dealer re-program the speedometer. The only problem is that they can only use factory tire sizes. I had the dealer program mine so the truck thinks it's running the largest factory size available. With my 34" tires, it's still off 1-2 mph at 60 and 2-3 at 70, but it's a lot closer than it would be if it were still programmed for the 265/70/17's that it came with.

2. Use an aftermarket speedometer calibrator. Dealerships that sell new, lifted trucks use these quite often. They won't void your warranty, because they don't change anything with the engine or transmission.

3. Tune it. The aftermarket canned tuners will work (Hypertech, Diablo, Super Chips, etc) and are quite reasonable. Or, you can spend a couple hundred more and go with a custom tune like Blackbear. I don't have any experience with Blackbear, but I've heard great things about their work. The general consensus seems to be that custom tunes are worth the extra expense over a canned tune.

@ Big Whiskey: I came across this hypertech module that will fix the speedometer, I think it's exactly what your talking about: http://shop.hypertech.com/speed-calibrator-732501-p/3021434.htm. I would really love a custom tune to get the most out of my 6.0 gas hog but don't want to spend a huge chunk of cash.

If you don't mind me asking how much was it? And what results did you see??

The in person tune is 340, I bought an AutoCal to go along with it to interface with the truck and my laptop in order to data log and send (email) to them data so they could further customize the tune if needed when you add something else to the truck, or if you needed to take out the custom tune and put the stock one back in before taking it to the dealer for some kind of warranty repair, should that be necessary.

It made my '14 a totally different truck, moved shift points deleted the AFM, raised the governed top speed, adjusted timing to make it run like it's supposed to, the factory has them running lean for the EPA crap. I have already scheduled my '16 for early March and can't wait. They gave me tunes for 87, 89, and 91 octane fuels, all with and without AFM. Based on my experiences with them I will be using them from now on.

Yes, that's exactly what I was referring to. It's quite a bit cheaper than a custom tune, but about the same price as a hand-held tuner.
