Periodic Cold Start Function

Hey guys and gals,

I have a 2015 5.3 Silverado with 16,000 miles. I have had it for about a year and I am the original owner. During the last 1k miles my truck will only periodically start with the cold start function (High idle), which I find really odd. One morning it starts with a high idle, the next it doesn't. I thought it might be the MAF sensor so I cleaned that out, but that did nothing. Took it to the dealer, they said there are no codes or faults, so they did nothing. It's just weird and I'd like to get it resolved, so if you have any input please comment!

Thanks,

Dustin

I've noticed that with mine. I tried to find a pattern but it seemed totally at random. It seemed to give me cold starts when I left work at night, but most mornings it wouldn't.

That is EXACTLY what mine is doing. An engineer at my office thinks it has something to do with whatever turns the cold start on, being too cold and not functioning properly. Where in the evening it is warmer outside, thus it functions properly.

I would keep an eye on the temps when starting but I wouldn't worry about it. :happysad:

2016 Silverado 5.3 does the same thing. However, it seems as though ambient temps between 40-60 Fahrenheit cause the high idle. Any colder than this and it instantly drops to ~600 rpm after startup.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

New member here researching cold starts with no high idle.  I also have a 2015 5.3L Silverado with just over 16,000.  Every fuel injected car and truck I have ever owned goes to high idle on cold starts.  My Silverado just recently stopped going to high idle and now idles at 500 rpm when warm as well.  Dealer says same: no codes, normal.  It's funny because it's a personal thing but I always start the truck/car and wait and watch the tack until it comes off high idle before proceeding.

Just curious if any more information has come to light on this subject.

Mine cold starts in the afternoon or at night when I’m leaving work, but not in the morning or around noon when leaving home. I had a -6 degree night last night and this mid morning it didn’t cold start. Hit or miss

It has been very cold where I live for the past week and my '16 has been high idling just fine when using automatic start.

I can't comment what it does when starting it with the key since I haven't used the key to cold start for a while.
