Interior trim removal (specifically steering wheel/cup holder)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. My buddy from high school owns a hydrodip company and is going to dip my interior trim. I can get the vents and stereo trim off but can't seem to get the cup holder trim and steering wheel. I wanted to ask if anyone else has reminded these pieces yet before I risk damaging them. TIA.

I've been trying to tackle this as well... There is a thread on this already but I still haven't been successful... See the following thread.... Removing the Air Bag and Steering Wheel

I just want to remove the silver trim from the steering wheel not touch the airbag at all. I planned on removing the negative side of battery and fuse for it once I figure out how to remove the trim.

Same here but I have the rear steering wheel controls and I think the screws to release the trim pieces are located under the airbag for which the ones without the rear controls are located on the rear of the steering wheel... I've attempted to remove it but have been unsuccessful this far.

Oh F. Screw that then haha. Not worth the trouble. How about the cup holder one?

I've just decided to vinyl wrap all my trim pieces instead of having the trim pieces dipped. Vinyl is cheaper, there's more options, I can change it, and I can do it myself... As for the cup holder, it should just pop out... Mine just snaps in...

Ok. I'll try again tomorrow for the cup holder. I was worried about snapping it.

Heres a video of removing the center console trim. Its from a 14, but seems to work thru 17 my. You should be able to get the cup holder off once the console top is off. I would recommend NOT using a screw driver in those areas (unless you want permanent dings).

I did mine when I replaced the wood colored trim with the silver trim.

Steering wheel is a pain as you have to remove the air bag to get the trim off.

There's no difference between 2014 - 2017, they're all K2XX.

If you are talking about the cupholders they are definitely different.

On the 2014/2015's the cupholder was "moveable" like the one in that video (see the slots near the front of the console?). They took this option away on the 2016/2017's and made the cupholder part of the trim around the edges.

That's what I thought. Is it possible to remove just the silver trim on the 16/17?

I didn't know, I like the ability to remove the cup holder and store stuff below them. Anyways that's a small difference, the process for removing the trim pieces should be the same. There's some screws, then you pop it up and remove the trim or unhook the connections up front and then remove the trim.

check out BC Chris' build - he has one of the best writeups on removing trim, including on the steering wheel (see post #56)

I have a 16 and removed my cup holder a couple of times. You have to work carefully but it will disconnect. Here is a picture once the top is off.

"yup, vinyl wrap is much more practical and cheaper. My vinyl wrap project was installed by Gatorwraps and I am very satisfied"
