2016 Gmc sierra 2500hd trans type

What kind of transmission does GM put in their sierra 2500hd 6.0 vortec 6 spd? I own one. What is the quality of these transmissions? I hear great things about the 6.0 vortec engine quality but i haven't heard much about their trans.

6L90. They are very solid. GM has the most reliable powertrains in the gasser HD segment.

The trans' is sourced 'inhouse' from GM Powertrain Div'.

It's a solid combo, as well as the rear end. May not be the most powerful but I would put money on it being the most reliable

I have to say the 4.10 teamed up to a vortec 6.0 pulls pretty well. I pull my 31ft 7000lbs travel trailer with ease.

Mountains or flat lands? I just got a 6.0 myself and looking to do some travel trailering in the inland NW. Curious how she will do.

Use the manual mode n lockout 6th gear. It keeps the rpms in the powerband. I pulled the pa turnpike towards wv and it had no problems. Like I said though lockout 6th.

How much r u towing? She will rev out some high rpms but I've been told that is normal for vortec. They make their peak power in the higher rpms.

No idea, bought the truck partly so I could get a bigger trailer. My current trailer is only 3500 loaded but I was thinking between 7-10k loaded would be where I will go next.

Why?

 

If it needs to be in 5th (or 4th) it will downshift anyway.

 

Use tow/haul to reduce the amount of shifting, if it wants to 'hunt'.

I towed my Arctic Fox 22H over lookout pass in the summer of 2014 with my 07 2500HD, I have also towed through the Blue Mts of Oregon between Pendleton and Ontario and over the coast range between Portland and Astoria. The TT tips the scales at just under 6200 lbs loaded for camping including water. 2I use Tow/Haul mode in Drive. The transmission does a good job of finding the right gear. On the flat it can easily stay in 6th with occasional shifts to 5th. I have been able to pull most hill in 4th gear letting the revs go up between 3000 and 4000. Once in that zone the powertrain is in its sweet spot and often I can actually accelerate a bit. Yes the MPG sucks and my 07 has the smaller 26gal tank so between the two I am stopping around 200mi or less for fuel. Which equates to somewhere around 9-10MPG at best. Going to the coast from Portland I burn about 1/2 a tank in 100 or so mi.
