2017 GMC Denali HD 2500 Tire question!

Hey guys.

 

I've ordered a 2017 GMC Denali HD 2500 Diesel. It will be delievred in 2 weeks. i would like to upgrade my tires ASAP and have a question. If i turn up the front end forks to level out the truck what size tires can i fit with keeping the stock 20" chrome rims. I have the truck fully loaded with off road package.

 

I want to buy BFG Mudd Terrain. I was hoping to be able to fit 325/60R 20 tires. Will these fit with out doing a lift kit and by just turning the front forks up to level out the truck? Please help, Thanks guys. Great site!

I think from a width perspective the biggest you can go is 295. Diameter would be whatever ratio gets you around 34"... Maybe 35" if you crank it all the way (whole host of other issues will be caused by cranking your bars all the way up.). This is all dependant on if you keep the stock wheels. If you go aftermarket be careful about keeping a positive offset. Your current wheels are 8.5" wide with a +31mm offset and 5.97" backspace.

 

My buddy has 20" wheels but they are 0 offset so they stick out away from the truck. This causes his 35"x12.5" tires to rub ever so slightly even though he lifted 4" up front. If he stuck with a positive offset he wouldn't have any issues but he wanted that Fuel wheel and liked the poking out look.

 

ETA - I've been researching this for five months. Still haven't pulled the trigger yet but the above is information I've gathered off the forums. If anyone disagrees please comment so we don't steer in the wrong direction.

I've got 35/12.50 with 1/4" wheel spacers and don't scrub at all. I'm too lazy to convert it to the size you are looking at but this will give you an idea. 86660db7f006a56fa7d6c7b5c39486ab.jpg

I do want to keep the stock 20's chrome. I don't mind cranking up my bars to make bigger tires fit. Will cranking them up some but not all the way be ok? What issues arise from cranking them up all the way? I just want the leveled out look and bigger tire fit, but don't want it to ride like shit. In the bfg mud terrains, what size can I get on the stock 20's? I won't have mud flaps in the way either. Thanks for the reply

What brand tires and size are you running? Did you crank your bars up? I'm trying to Avalon paying for a lift kit. Can you post close up pic of your tire? Any pros/cons you have ran into with your setup? Thanks for sharing!

Toyo mt 35/12.50 20. Yes on cranking stock bars. Front sits 1" lower than the back. No real pros or cons, it just works.

Looking at their website now and see two 35/12.50/20. One is 121Q and one is 125Q whats the difference? all the specs look the same

Wade, any tips on trimming the front air dam since it looks like you have done yours? I want to do this but am a bit nervous.

I followed the curve of the air dam with painters tape, then cut it with a die grinder, the took a knife and shaved all of the little rough spots. 121q and 125q are the speed ratings. Would have to check memory. But probably around 100mph maybe less. Nothing to worry about etc. as long as you stay with a 10ply tire.

BFG Mud Terrain 305 55 20's on stock rims

 

Or

 

Nitto Trail Grapplers 35 12.5 20's on stock rims

 

Any suggestions on the two? Thanks

121q and 125q are the speed ratings. Would have to check memory. But probably around 100mph maybe less. Nothing to worry about etc. as long as you stay with a 10ply tire.

 

The 121 and the 125 is the load index not the speed rating. On some HD truck tires, its load at single rear wheel and dual rear wheel (it will say 124/121Q for example). Q is the speed rating (99mph).

Two versions of the 35x12.5x20 exist. One is 121 (3197lbs) load index, the other 125 (3638lbs) load index. You should always meet or exceed the factory load rating on the truck. So, if you are using the stock 20" wheels, those have a load index of 121 (Goodyear Wrangler SRA 265/60/20). Both applications of that Toyo could work, but the 125 index may allow for higher pressures. Its more than likely that the 121 tire is a C or D load while the 125 tire may be an E load.

 

 

Load Index

P195/60R15 87S - The load index (87) is the tire size's assigned numerical value used to compare relative load carrying capabilities. In the case of our example, the 87 identifies the tire's ability to carry approximately 1,201 pounds.

 

The higher the tire's load index number, the greater its load carrying capacity.

89 = 1,279 pounds

88 = 1,235 pounds

87 = 1,201 pounds

86 = 1,168 pounds

85 = 1,135 pounds

 

A tire with a higher load index than that of the Original Equipment tire indicates an increase in load capacity. A tire with a load index equal to that of the Original Equipment tire indicates an equivalent load capacity. A tire with a lower load index than the Original Equipment tire indicates the tire does not equal the load capacity of the original.

Dont forget that any HD truck should have an E load rated tire. As long as that is followed the load index wont matter as the tire will already have the correct load rating for the truck. Nice info post though!

    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
