Hey everyone, first post.

I have a 2007 Sierra SLE 160k miles. It has been a great truck, but this morning on my way to work once I got off the highway, I noticed a whining sound coming from the truck. It goes with the RPM when I give it gas it gets louder, whines low at idle. Turned the truck off, made sure all electronics where off, then back on and it started whining immediately before even putting it in gear. (Starting it itself had no issues). It is a 30 mile drive home, so not sure weather to drive it or find a ride.

Checked all fluids, checked out fine.

Would appreciate any help.

If it does it all the time even when parked, my first suspect would be Idler pulley or one of the other accessories on the drive belts(water pump, power steering pump, alternator).

A little trick I learned. Place a wood dowel/stick etc on each of the accessories while it's running and place the other side next to your ear. You'll hear which one it is pretty easily. Be careful though.. you don't want to get that stick to get caught up in the belt!

10 year old truck with 160k miles should have some noise. I am going to guess that it is the idler pulley or possibly just the belt itself. Stop in and buy good quality replacement pieces and trade them out next opportunity you get. I seriously doubt that a 30 mile trip will cause it to get much worse, it will most likely go thousands more miles without falling apart..........

I was thinking possibly the belt or alternator. Never thought of the idler pulley.

That was what mine was.. I've had them go bad on both my 6.2 and the 6.0.

Look into replacing the entire assembly if it is. I paid like $50-60 for just the pulley and then had the spring go a few weeks later. There was a new pulley on the tensioner and I think it was around $80/90 or so.. it would've been cheaper to just replace the whole assembly from the get-go.
