SELLING MY GM FOR A FORD

Recommended Posts

I have a 1998 Chevy Silverado that I've only had for 9 months now. Since my ownership I've replaced the intake gasket, block heater, and now my front axle seals are leaking. My mechanic told me that the seals are a common thing and that it will probably come back within a year or two. He and a few other people also said that GM has a bad design with the seals. Who wants this? I pretty much know what you people are going to tell me, but I want to hear it anyway. Should I sell my truck and get a Ford F-150? It's a 1999 with the triton 5.4L.

I will push either one of my Chevy's before I drive another Ford. I've had three (85 F-150, 92 F-150 and 99 Exploder) and won't ever go back. I had a 1997 Chevy Silverado that I put almost 100,000 miles on before trading and didn't have any of the problems you mention. Both my '00 Silverado and '01 Tahoe have been trouble free for 30,000+ and 7,000+ respectively.

Just my 2 cents worth.

First you bought a used truck at an age that will nickel and dime you a while, then a year later you want to trade for another used truck also at an age that will nickel and dime you a while. It has nothing to do with Chevy or Ford, it just sounds like you want to be stuck the same type of situation again and again.

There isn't anything wrong with buying a 98. I own a 94 that I also got used, and I will put its dependabillity against any truck on the forum. Just sounds like ya got bad luck or maybe a lemmon. If I were you...I'd start hunting for a 5.3L Bow Tie. :fume:

I would stay with the Chevy!

On the front seal leak, I had them replaced under warrenty on my '97 Tahoe. It wasn't any time before they started leaking again. They just have the wet look, no actual drips. I just check the fluid levels and let it go. I have never had to add any fluid.

I love Chevy's. But if your gonna drive a used one, you need to know how to do your own work. Its not like a Honda - you know - trouble free for 6 years then everything goes at once so you throw it away and get a new one. Things are gonna periodically break and there pretty easy to fix yourself if you take the time to do it. I can build a chevy from the frame up, but my gf got some blue bulbs for her lexus and I couldnt even figure out how to put them in. Turns out you have to remove the whole front bumper. So keep the chevy and learn to fix the axle seels yourself. Its just like doing a break job.

You have a 5-year-old vehicle. Stuff will start to wear. Going to a 4-year-old vehicle will be more of the same in a little while, regardless of who built it.

Having said that, I've never had a good experience with a Ford or Chrysler product, and I've been pleased with every GM product I've owned. Bought my first car in 1958 (a 46 Chevrolet "businessmans coupe") and have driven perhaps 1,000,000 miles since them.

If you can't afford new or near-new, then stick with the Chevrolet.

Like the sticker says, I would rather push my Chevy than drive a Ford. Ford trucks are horrible compared to Chevy. It still makes no sense that the Explorer is the best selling SUV of all time. That rig is such a POS. Maybe you should sell this Chevy and get a different one. Sounds like you might have one that someone didn't take care of.

I bought a 92 Jimmy in 97 with 71k on the clock and ended up in somewhat of the same situation. I had a few major repairs, including a replacement 4.3 put in due to a bad crankshaft. I was doing sales at one point and putting 1000 miles a week on her, so the miles racked up in a hurry. That's why I got rid of her and got the new truck when I could. Hindsight as always.

Click here for why you should stick with your Chevy!!!

i've owned nothing but chevy my whole life...all of them have been used, and they all will break now and then. look at it this way, your truck has a new block heater and intake gasket....if you can do some repairs yourself it makes it more manegable....

your talking about switching manufacturers...and it all depends how your luck goes....by grand-father has always had ford....his choice, he's had good luck....

guy that taught me to work on cars used to drive ford, but switched to chevy and never looked back...

You people are making some great points. I thank you. I did have a question however about Fords. How come they say they're the number 1 best seller? Is it because they're more reliable?

Not sure, could be because they are not as expensive.

I would stick with the Chevy.

Our 98 Suburban K1500 never had any problems with the seals on it and it had 78k on it when we got rid of it.

Ford is the best seller because they split up sales of Chevy and GMC as two different brands. If you added the sales of the two together, they would bury Ford. Just look around when you are driving(keep your eyes on the road) and you will see.

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
