Towing 6300lb camper trailer without equalizer hitch.

Is it reasonable to tow a trailer like this without an equalizer hitch with a new Sierra 2500HD? The tongue weight is in the 500 to 600 range. The trailer is 27ft long.

The 2015+ up HD trucks are rated to tow their max tow rating with or without weight distribution. So, if your truck is rated for 14,000lbs at the hitch, you can do that with or without WD.

 

6300lbs is nothing for an HD.

I have a 2012 2500hd, own a 5500# passport with around 500 pounds of tongue weight. I don't use a WDH, it barely makes the truck ride different. The only thing I notice is a little wiggle with a hard cross wind pushing, but that doesn't bother me.

All you technically need is a little bit of anti-sway. Lippert does make an add-on module that'll give you electronic anti-sway

Sway control would be the main reason to use weight bearing hitch.....beyond that I think you are fine. My camper already has one so I use it for that.

We decided to just use an equalizer hitch that was set up for a Silverado 1/2 ton. The trailer sits higher in the front than the back by about 1 inch or a bit more. That seems close enough to level.

I wasn't sure what was better, with or without. In this picture I had them hooked up, but it was 35-40 mph crosswinds. The time before this someone borrowed my L bracket clamps so it rendered my LDH useless. Camper is 8200lbs in this picture.

Equal-i-zer hitch is easy to adjust, having trailer level or slightly nose down will pull better. And if it was set up for a 1500 you might be transferring too much weight back to the front axle of your pickup. I use CAT scale and dial mine in, no worries pulling it even in the 50 mph crosswinds by Glacier National Park last summer. Blew the stairs open and had to bungee them in but trailer pulled fine.
