Bouncing Off Rev Limiter

Want to know what you guys think about this.

 

Was on a road trip on some back country 2 lane roads and came to a stop sign behind a dump truck, we both go through the stop sign and once I see it's clear I WOT the truck to pass, I was doing about 20mph when I floored it, downshifted and look off, RPMs climbed and then bounced off the rev limiter 3 times very rapidly, possibly a backfire and then slammed into the next gear.

 

This happened again today, a few weeks later.

 

Do any of you experience this?

 

No trouble codes, no lights, no tune, running 87 octane, only tow a 4,000lb boat around occasionally so it has not been abused

How many miles? Did you buy this truck new or used? Any Mods or Tuned? It should never bounce off the rev limiter with a factory engine/trans tune.......

I bought it CPO which we all means squat but have put 30k miles on it and it's at 56,000 miles now with no tune, no mods except RC level kit

Any wheel spin; traction control or stability control could cause that.

 

Are you able to duplicate that often?

If so turn off traction control and stability control off one at a time to see if that changes anything. Hold traction control button down for app. 8 seconds or so to turn off the stability control. But again try just traction control off first.

If that corrects the problem, and you have no tire spin maybe ask the dealer if there's anything they can update or adjust.

 

Or do you have bigger tires, if so, maybe your speedo needs to be corrected, that could cause that also,if the computer thinks you're accelerating a a different speed. just a thought

 

Maybe it had a tune before you bought it.

Or maybe it would benefit from a good tune now.

SLT trim are you 5.3 or 6.2 engine?

Hopefully 5.3 since he's running 87 octane.

Being a used vehicle most likely it had been tuned at some point (possibly by a knuckle head LOL). If it is still in warranty just run it back over to your favorite dealership and have them do any updates that show up, that way the tune settings will be wiped out and you will be set back to factory spec. I would not want to run it with a questionable tune in the ECM if it is showing these strange symptoms. Good catch on that you knew that was not right when it happened......

Banging off the rev limiter means the transmission did not shift at the proper time. While it could be something mechanical inside the transmission, its probably "electrical" . Have the dealer check to make sure that it has the latest updates. If they can't figure it out, I would suggest a tune so that you can set the shift points.

^^^^Yes, hence my question. I have never bounced off the rev limiter in my truck, but have hit the speed limiter a handful of times.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
