Cant Order Roof Markers on 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD 6.6L Denali (CA Emis

I am trading in my 2011 GMC Sierra SLT 1500 Crew Cab and ordering the new 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD Z71 6.6L DuraMax Diesel Denali Crew Cab with every bell and whistle possible.

While working with a local GMC dealer and building the order on paper, I was told that GM has restrictions on certain builds and I cannot get the (A48) Power Rear Sliding Window AND the (U01) Smoked Amber Roof Markers together due to CA emissions. I can get the power rear sliding window by itself without issue but I can't even order the truck with the provisions (wiring harness) in place for the roof markers because its being sold in CA.

I just saw a brand NEW 2017 3500HD Denali Dually for sale on the lot of a separate GMC dealer and it had both the power rear sliding window AND the roof markers TOGETHER (from the factory) which is essentially the same cab body. So, why is it okay for the 3500HD Denali but not the 2500HD Denali?

I asked the owner of the dealership that I am working with for this build (Why?) but he didn't even know. He said he is going to contact someone at GM too see if they know. I searched the internet and found other people asking the same question but haven't been able to find any responses or answers as of yet.

Does anyone know what the little amber roof lights have to do with CA emissions and why they wont allow it in CA on this model only? OR does anyone know if there is a factory workaround on how to get both features as part of the build? I know I can do it after it arrives but I am trying to prevent having to rip a new 2018 Denali apart once it gets here when it an be done at the factory for $50 more.

Feedback Please!

Dually trucks its a DOT mandated thing, that's why it had them. Any vehicle over 80" wide is required to have amber marker lights facing forward (the roof, and then the two at the front end of the dually fender) and required to have red amber markers facing rearward (two on the rear of the dually fender and the bar under the tailgate).

Must be something with California vehicle law that says, per US DOT, if its 80 or under and doesn't require the lights, then we won't let anyone get them.

Funny thing is, a single rear wheel GM HD truck body is 80.51 inches wide...

I would get a California state truck from a state that uses California emissions that lets you order clearance lights. NE1 emissions code, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington

Cali emissions are no different then every other on a Duramax.

Crazy about the cab lights, hopefully your dealer is able to get you answers.

Guessing he doesn't want to buy out of state as there is more money and hassle involved.

Not sure why they have the restriction, but the order guide confirms what the deaer is saying,

RPO code for the lamps is U01

On 2018 Denali:

U01 Lamps, Smoked Amber roof marker (required with dual rear wheels)
2500 - Not available with (YF5) California state emissions requirements.
3500 - Standard with dual rear wheels. Not available with (YF5) California state emissions requirements on single rear wheels.

I do appreciate everyone's quick replies here. I do understand why the dually HAS them in accordance with US DOT, CFR, NHTSA, etc.

GM conveniently does not have any exterior body dimensions available online or in their catalog other than mirror width dimension which is listed at 80.51" (on both 2500 and 2500 dually trucks). I am still looking for overall body width of the 2500 (fender to fender).

Again, I do understand all the US DOT stuff and why the duallys and 80" wide or over vehicles do have them.

But what I don't understand is WHY they don't allow the 2500 to get the roof markers in CA (and other certain states) due to emissions?

Are you in the business?

"15HDriver" I think you are right. I think there maybe something in CA law that designates vehicles under 80" wide are not allowed to be made with markers because of some towing class designation or something. It somehow identifies a particular vehicle width just by its lights in the dark or something. This stupid state continues to amaze me. I am going to look into the (NE1) and see if we can do something like that. The state probably has that workaround covered as well but worth looking into. Thanks

Probably a law with "unintended consequences" of banning them on anything but a dual rear vehicle vehicle.

Not something new, if you search the net you can find posts dating back to 2005 on the subject.

Are you wanting 20in. wheels? If not try ordering a 3500 and see if you can get them that way, the 3500 does not cost anymore money but is only available with 18in. wheels.

Too bad you can not order the factory CC lights. You could do a good set of after market CC lights. My 08 Dually

had a CC light burn out and GM dealers in Canada wanted a ridiculous 100.00 for the one light. I found a good set of aftermarket LED CC lights for 60.00 on EBay. Of course , it was an easy install when the truck already had CC lights, but many people get them put on trucks that did not have them. Back when I was buying SRW trucks, I was always able to order them in Canada, as a factory order they are very reasonable and they are something I have to have on a truck.

Yeah, probably going to have to have them installed when the truck comes in from the factory. When/if they are ordered with the truck it's only a $55.00 add on. If you do it later, its a lot more. Parts (about $70-90) and then their ridiculous cost of labor is a killer unless I tackle it myself. I would rather someone else do it that knows what they are doing rather then me take my changes on screwing something up on a new truck. I just didn't want to have someone drill thru the new paint on the roof, gut holes, rip out some of the interior, pull down the headliner and parts on the dash and A pillar, etc just to run the switch and wire harness. I was hoping to get around all that on a brand new $70k truck that I just had custom built for me at the factory a week earlier.

Unfortunately, no. I do want the 20" chrome cast wheels. Much nicer look to me. I dont mind the 3500, I just dont need a 1 ton vehicle. I did look at them but a much stiffer ride and overkill for what I am towing. Now that I say that, I may regret that thought and have to eat my words if I get a bigger trailer later.

Yeah, there are threads all over the internet about the same topic dating way back. Trust me, I have done my research. Not too many answers either. Typical CA legalities. I am just looking for the correlation of lights to emissions and why this is such an issue. I cant seem to find anyone who has the foggiest idea.

Nope, but I'm looking to go back to a dmax, so I looked up.

(although I did spend a bunch of years in Tier 1 auto parts manufacturing)

1ton and 3/4ton have the exact same ride, only difference is 1ton has overload springs and only way you will feel those is if you squat the rear of the truck 3in. and if that is the case you will be glad to have them.

Order a 1ton. and add a new set of take off 20's?

People that do it all the time should have the tools and know how to make it a simple job. I did one years ago on a 1981 Ford F-250. The truck was fairly new at the time and so was I . My biggest challenge was to put up a scaffold to make it easy to lay out and drill the holes.
