I think this is by design.  It automatically sets the focus to what you are currently viewing. ie if you are on the forum index it will search 'All Content'

 

I suppose it would be possible to change, I saw a discussion on another site about it. But I also think it works as intended so no reason to change it?

As a work around, I highly recommend using google to search the site.  It will always be better then anything we can build in native to the site.

 

For example, use the search string "site:gm-trucks.com Z71"
