Power Assist Steps

In the process of buying a new Denali 1500 and unable to make up my mind about the power assist steps.  I am considering both the Denali Utimate that has the power steps as standard equipment, or adding them to a non-Ultimate model.  I live in Nebr, so we have winter weather with ice/snow.  I do like the streamlined look when steps are retracted, but concerned about potential mechanical issues with such a system. Also concerned that with their relatively short history,  if they become a "problem", GM will discontinue and give my truck a negative factor when it comes time to trade/sell.

 

Would like to hear comments/opinions from those folks that have these.

They seem good only if you are from up north and they salt the roads I wouldn't get them.

 

The salt causes issues with them.

Lots of people are not happy with them. They take them off and install AMP power step. Which is I understand is very high quality and very few people have issues with them.

 

I’d suggest getting them without the OEM steps and just buying the AMP’s.

 

Electric steps are nice mostly because they solve the issue with ground clearance and steps. Although I’m pretty sure most people like them, including myself, just because they’re just cool.

I understand that the steps would be electrically activated, but is the mechanism that operates the steps also electric or are there hydraulics involved?

Buy with the factory steps. Built in dash factory switch to leave them open and covered by 3yr 36month factory warranty plus covered by extended warranty if you choose to buy one. Also light up under the vehicle when approaching the vehicle in the dark. I'm sure there are thousands more happy with them than the few that are not.

The factory trifold steps are useful for accessing the front of the truck bed when the step is folded all the way out and back. I installed a foldacover G4  bed cover with a front leaf that opens independently and put in a small toolbox at the front of the truck bed. Super handy and I use it constantly. I rarely use the side step for truck access to the drivers seat as it just seem to be at too high of an elevation (maybe due to me being 6ft tall) but when I step on it I have to duck down to keep from hitting my head and it just feels awkward. I usually just step over it LOL. Kids 9 = 7 and 6 use the step on the passenger side and works well for their little short legs.

I do have an intermittent problem with the drivers side step, occasionally when I close the door it does NOT fold in until the truck is put into gear (forced closed by the failsafe)  normally it closes about 2 or 3 seconds after the door is closed. I will see if they can check that out at next dealership visit, probably a sensor or something. I never noticed lighting on the Trifold steps do they have like factory down lighting??? I rarely drive at night so I may have missed that feature? If it does not have lighting I think it would be cool to add that............... will maybe check that out in the near future.

Does anyone know if the GM power assist steps can be locked in the open position? I have looked at an owner's manual and do not see it.  Seems as if they would need to locked open for cleaning?

if they work like the after market ones, just hold your foot on it an close the door.  hold your foot on it until you feel it try to go up and then it should stay put.  I know that's how the Amps work and I have seen GM and for ones do the same I'm pretty sure.

They will stay open after you close the doors if you set them in the full open position (swung back towards the rear tire) by hitting the button at the back of the step.  That si the best position for cleaning also.......

There's a button on the center stack that will either leave them out all the time, or move them to the rear for bed access.

The AMP steps are warrantied for 5/60k. So the Amps are not only a better product but also come with a longer warranty and in my view, look better.
