Input on a possible tire failure?

About a month prior to rotating my tires a while back I noticed a slight hop or vibration while driving around 52 mph so I decided it was Definitely time to rotate Especially since it had been about 12,000 miles since the last rotation. Since rotating them the hop has gotten considerably worse and now shakes pretty good at nearly all speeds but is more noticeable when you just get going when the tires are a little colder (unless I just get used to it). My truck is a 2007.5 2500 HD Silverado and I am running 285 75/16 on the 16 inch stock 6.5 inch wide wheels. Tires were rebalanced about 30,000 miles ago then we realized a slightly bent rim might have been the issue. The bent rim was replaced about 10k miles ago.

The local discount tire will take the wheels off to rebalance them but said once they are off they will refuse to put them back on because those tires are way too wide for the wheels. They said one or more of the tires went bad due to the width difference of wheels to tires. How likely would this be? I thought people ran 285s on these wheels all the time...

Thanks

I did a quick check on Tire Rack and it looks like that size of tire is made to go on a 7.5- to 9-inch wide wheel.  Of course, folks use beadlock wheels and wider tires for off-road use, but running regular wheels and too-wide tires on the street (and not rotating the tires every 6000-8000 miles) is a recipe for the tires to flex more and wear badly (depending on the quality of your tires too), both on the tread and the internal structure, hence the "hop" you are experiencing.  There are more tire dealers becoming real sticklers about what they'll service, based on the potential liability of if someone hurts themselves and then turns around and sues them.

Scortch, I am a newbie here, I have been a tire dealer in Florida for 40 years, I will probably get hammered for what I am going to say but I can handle it. I am not an engineer but I have probably installed, myself,  over 50k tires  and balanced twice that many over the years. When I started at my shop we grew up on Truing machines and on the car balancers so I have looked at separated and OR tires in my life. Of course the problem as the industry not wanting to handle tire issues, it is a PITA, all the paperwork. The manufacturer sure does not want to label it defective because of recall potential, call the manufacturer and ask for a goodwill adjustment. They code Goodwill with a 7 if my memory serves me right. Whole different way to the FEDS then,  National Tire Tread Safety act brought on many changes except the real problem  that I felt was to put an expiration date on tires. Anyway, call the manufacturer ask to take to another a dealer who they recommend in your area. I would help you out if you around me. The previous guy is correct about the legal aspect although I have looked at a lot and sat on the stand quiet a few imes but have never heard that as a cause of failure, maybe center wear but not failure. Again this is just my recommendation. Good Luck with that one. David

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
