Coded keys?

I have a 15 Silverado LTZ z71 and a while ago someone tried to break into my truck. They destroyed my driver side lock and the key won’t work. So I have to change out my door lock and my ignition since I don’t want to carry two keys for the truck. I don’t have to change out my ignition but might as well get it out of the way. So my question is if I replace my ignition which replaces the key,, Are these ignition keys coded or have a chip in it? Or does the truck read off of the key fob?

the keys have a chip in them, and the chip "excites" the transponder in the ignition assembly. changing the ignition will possibly require BCM programming to the new ignition, to the new keys. it has been a while since ive messed with key programming in these trucks 4 years to be exact, so someone correct me if im wrong.

That sucks. Hopefully they make a lock that can be molded to my key. That would make thing a lot simpler.

sorry to break the bad news, but unless you have tds, and gds2, these vehicles are exceedingly hard to work on yourself, especially electronic modules/components.

What’s a tds and gds2?

acdelco tds is the public system you can sign up for to program modules yourself which costs money, gds2 is the diagnostics software specifically for GM vehicles which also cost money to use.

I could go to the dealership and hopefully it’s not to expensive

usually dealerships will charge $100 minimum labor rate. we have had customers get charged upwards of $400 just to remove and diagnose a bad HMI module.

I would try to see if you can get a lock to match your ignition key.  I cant see that not being an option.

Is it not covered by insurance? Depends on your deductible but I could easily see this running to $500 or more. You have the driver's door, ignition, tailgate and the spare tire lock.

I haven't used a key to unlock a car in years. They all have had remote lock/unlock. Except the wife's Wrangler but we never lock that anyway as it would be easy to just slice through the top if someone really wanted in.

That’s what I was thinking too. I’m pretty sure they have locks for me key. I was kinda worried the other day when my battery was dying! If my battery were to completely die then I wouldn’t be able to get in my truck. I would have to get a locksmith to jimmy it.

I’m pretty sure it’s but all those parts won’t add up to 500.

Man I think I should just get the door lock and key only. Might have to suck it up and carry two keys
