2015 GMC Sierra Caught Fire

Has anyone else had their truck catch on fire in their driveway?  Nothing was left plugged in (phone, tablet, etc).  The fire department even wrote in their report the fire originated in the consule!  GM did their inspection and said it was an external source which caused the fire.  The 3rd party inspector even went as far to say the sun must have come in thru the tinted windows, hit the side mirror and somehow started it.  (think magnifying glass).  Considering the truck was parked east (around 4pm) of  30 foot tall cedar trees and facing south....that is impossible.  The truck sat in the drive all night, my husband ran a couple of errands and parked it by 4pm.  At 6pm he went to get something out of it and this is what we found.  Any ideas on what to do now?

The funny part is there is no wiring in that area of the console. It would have caught fire in the back of the console.

A friend had the siding on their house catch on fire from a reflection off of those fancy magnified yard lights.

Where you driving it with the windows down..... something may have come in and smoldered for a while too.

I had an engine fire start in my 91 Silverado from a cigarette someone tossed out their windows the thing was sucked right into the air filter and lite it on fire.

Thankfully I realized what was happening and got the cover off and tossed the air filter. Still had to replace a gasket in the carb and the injector.

But, yes the location is weird.

When did this happen? What was the ambient temp outside? What's in the console near the damage as far as wiring goes? I don't think there's any wiring there, is there?

Do you have insurance? Get it fixed.

Actually, there is wiring from the phone charger INSIDE the top console.  The inspection shows 3 wires leading from that area and they are damaged.  No, he didn't drive with the windows down that day.  I'm glad you were able to stop the fire in your truck.

This occurred on August 28th.  The high temp was 90 that day, but the fire occurred late afternoon when it was beginning to cool.  Thankfully, it was parked and no one was hurt.  There is wiring coming from the top console phone chargers.  That is what the fire dept said caught fire.  And yes, I have insurance.  I think this is a safety problem that should be addressed by GM.

If there are multiple circumstances that this has happened, then yes GM should address the issue. Chances are though, this is just a fluke and GM will not pay any attention to your issue. Sucks to say, but that’s what BIG companies like this do.

I hope your issues are all corrected and things are made right by your insurance.

Is the wireless charger even available on the bench seat configuration?  There is however USB and trying to remember is there is a 12v in there from my 2014.

A quick google search turned up nothing as far as console (jump seat) fires being a reoccurring common problem. In fact, I didn't see any reports of it.

I wonder what led GM to say it was an external source? Were they any battery powered gizmo's in there? Flashlight? Power pack?

I don't think there's much you can do outside an expensive court battle to make GM pay for the damage. That's only if your local FD would be willing to testify in court and have some sort of proof that a wiring defect caused it.

No, I think the OP was talking about the USB ports located inside the storage area, under the lid.
