Another low oil pressure thread

I have an 06 5.3 with 272k miles. I bought last year with 242k. Now I’ve done a ton of searching and talking with others on this and haven’t found anything that matches my symptoms.

Randomly over the last 6-8 months I’ve noticed usually when idling for a few minutes there would be a lifter noise and sound like no oil pressure.  I’d shut it down or start driving and it go away.  Until last week oil pressure sender was bad.  I replaced, and confirmed oil pressure drop after idling for a few.  To backtrack a few, last month I was due for ny state inspection and had it all ready (without evap monitor ran due to bad vent solenoid) so I went to a local Valvoline for the sticker and said change the oil to save me time and mess also.  Got the cheap oil change and failed inspection (fuel lines finally started leaking the day AFTER I was under it). So I took the oil change, dropped truck off to friend for lines since I had no free time.  Got truck back and it would make valvetrain noise consistently.  I’ve seen in the past shitty oil filters cause so I got a new oil filter and put it on and MUCH better.  Replaced the filter and topped off oil and replaced switch.  Driving it’s been fine and quiet for most part (showing her age/miles) but when I drive it I average 140 miles in a day. Idled last night for 3 minutes waiting for someone and started up again.

I talked to my friend and he’s ruled out oil pump and believes it’s “excessive clearances” within engine and it’s worn out.   I don’t really know the history of the truck but I got it for the crew cab and the cheap price.  (Also replaced a ton of shit along the way, tcase, front diff, lines, shocks, brakes and more.

So so short story is, extended idle at operating temp oil pressure drops and eventually valvetrain will make

noise if not shut down.

Sounds like the o-ring on the oil pick up tube is allowing air to get sucked in. It is a known problem on these LS engines.

^^^^^ This and you might look into running a different brand of oil or trying 10w-40

I’ll go with it’s wearing out crowd. At least you’re getting this indication so you can make a decision. Repair or replace.
