tmf6902 Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 I was doing laundry (yes I do the laundry....when I run out of underwear)..anyway me and the wife to be got some fabric softner and that goofy ball that you put it in.....you have probably seen it, you put the softner into the ball and pull the plug that's inside so it closes...toss it in the wash...and it is supposed to come out during the final rinse cycle and make you close soft as the leather of a 2004 silverado.....my questions for all you mechanical wizzez....how does it open? How does it know when to open? I like to think of myself as a fairly smart person, but I can't figure this one out...I could think of a way or two that would make it open...but if it were to open and release it's contents during the wash cycle(not the rinse)...then it wouldn't work....and since my clothes are snuggly soft....it must be working........ahh...the thing you think about once you have to spend all day infront of the tv watching football.... thanks......TMF and please don't flame me for doing laundry....I cook too....you can flame me for that...but I love to eat....6' 8" 245lbs....so unless I want to eat mac and cheese 365 days a year....i get the cooking duties....plus I'm Italian....so I gotta get my eat on.... sorry I made a typo in the subject...it should read "Fabric"
MountaineerTom Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 How does the Downy fabric-softener ball work?
gmcjoe Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 I'm not sure what is more disturbing, the question being asked or Tom posting that reply
tmf6902 Posted August 30, 2003 Author Posted August 30, 2003 Good I'm not going crazy....or maybe I already am...I figured it had something to do with that, but I thought it was release during the rinse cycle....which I guess it is....if the seal is broken during the first spin cycle....the softener is still inside the ball until the ball quits spinning...then when the washer fills with water again the softner is released......I wonder how much money that guy made with his patent.....well another one of lifes great mysteries solved.....thanks for the link...i can sleep once more!!!

99Silver6.0 Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 this entire thread is disturbing Oh well, learn something new every day! I did always wonder how that little bastard worked!
k1500chevy97 Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 d**n i just throw in the soap , clothes , start the washer , when they get done in the washer i throw the clothes in the dryer add some fabric sheets then turn on the dryer . WTF is up with a stupid ball ?
99silveradoz71 Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 I'm not sure what is more disturbing, the question being asked or Tom posting that reply Ha, I could read that How Stuff Works site all day.
greyghost03 Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Hmmm.... Never really questioned how it works before, but my wife uses it in the wash and d@mn it makes the clothes smell good! BTW - Tom that's a pretty cool site!
Elwood Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 I'm not sure what is more disturbing, the question being asked or Tom posting that reply What scares me is the though of Tom doing laundry. I wouldn't let him touch mine, he's bound to mess it up. As for the ball, that thing is great, but I don't use that dang fill line. I always go over that and make my clothes nice and soft.
pacodiablo Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Never used one. I tried to use some Downey Wrinkle Realeser today. That stuff doesn't work for s**t.
