Cold Air Intake 5.3 question

I do like the smooth intake tube which I think is far superior to the stock set up. But I wonder if I could run the same tube and put the stock airbox back in with a better filter. Any insight on that before I start taking things apart?
 
Or the flipside, I could just sell the whole set up. I have the box and I just clean the filter. Anyone interested? (Located in Southern New Hampshire).

I’ve had the same experience to the point I am thinking about going back to stock. 

 

If you ask me the noise sounds like ******. I am also getting about 1 mpg less. Thought this was to increase mpg ?

I temporarily took my AFE Momentum GT off and put the stock box back on. I was getting a headliner buzz / rattle which If I push on or near the overhead console it would go away temporarily.

 

I Dremeled out another hole in the stock box to match the metal fender cutout. Not sure how much that will help airflow on stock box but it was a free mod. 

 

I may end up selling the AFE but will run stock box for a bit and see if rattle is still there.

Took my K&N CAI off this morning - one test drive back to stock and already noticed it silenced my exhaust. 
 

I have a flowmaster 40 with third cat and resonator removed. There is a def sound loss with the stock Ai. 
 

Quick update after a couple of drives 

I would say the exhaust tone is not lost - just less cabin noise with stock air box

You would have to search for it. But it is like disconnect the  battery start truck let idle then wot a few times so the idle tables are set but that is after truck is at 180* so the idle tables are right. Even the GM intake says retune by dealer. But its a relearn not a "tune".
