Fuel Gauge not matching Fuel Range

Hey guys,

 

I recently got a 2016 GMC Sierra and noticed something strange. My fuel gauge will be basically all the way on empty, but my "Miles Remaining" on the digital display will still show 40-50 miles. There is no way this seems correct. 

 

I also got 32" wheels/tires put on right after I bought the truck, so not sure if there was an issue before the upgrade, and not sure if maybe something in the computer has to be re-calibrated.

Why do you run the tank so low?

Bad idea.

Shortens fuel pump life.

Gasoline cools and lubricates the fuel pump.

 

Normal operation.

I understand that, its not something I do often and I fill up when I normally get to a quarter tank for best practice.

On the GMT-900s, when the needle is on E, there's still 0-4 gallons (0-13%) on board.  When the needle sits on 1/4 tank, there's still eleven gallons on board.  These are the figures for my truck, the others are similar but not exact.

That sounds about right then. When I checked the myGMC app, it showed I had around 3 gallons left once I was on E (it just seemed like a bit much). This is what I was looking for. Thanks for the information!

GM is idiot proofing by giving people more gas so they dont run out thats all.

While on the subject, also the DIC mpg doesn't not match hand calculated, if you haven't discovered that yet.

Ya I did notice that also.

 

One last question (as a new GMC owner, off topic). I have the Eco 5.3, and it seems to very seldom to stay in the 4 cylinder mode, even when on cruise control. Is this just how that feature works?

Yeah its very touchy, most people turn it off including me. It gets annoying. I notice around 2mpg drop but its worth it, unless you are doing lots of interstate driving in cruise.

The bigger wheels and tires caused this.  Those motors usually duty cycle in V4 about 50% of the time depending on vehicle weight.  The lighter trucks will run in V4 more often than the heavier or more heavier loaded ones.  Also had mine turned off in the tune.
