Is the pre-vortech 7.4L ...

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for an old Suburban to be my extra/bike hauling/kid hauling car. I saw a 1995 2500 4x4 with the 7.4L engine advertised. 1995 was pre-vortech though. I'm worried that the car will be too slow. Is the pre-vortech 7.4 any good? Are their any easy and smog legal ways to get more power out of it?

Any other things to watch out for on a 1995 2500

Thanks in advance!

It should put out respectable power, you will love it for towing lots of torque. My uncle has a 92 K3500 with the TBI 454 and it has lots of pulling power. My brother has a 96 c3500 with the Vortec 454 and it has much better response and gains better. Not sure about the TBI, but the Vortec seems to get the same MPG whether the trailer is empty or loaded.

The TBI is limited on how well it can respond to mods without a different prom. The vortec is much more adaptable even without PCM programming because of the use of MAF.

I think you would be pleased with the performance of the TBI 454 though, nice engine.

Hi go with the 96 or later vortec. I have had both engines and like the vortec so much more. The advantage with the vortec besides more power is if you wanted to wake it up as in get more power out of it. It is fairly easy to do. The OBD II can be reflashed or reprogrammed depending on the terminology you use.
