Radar Detector- Hard Wire

I am looking to hardwire my radar on my 2003 2500 HD LT w/ onstar. I would like to put it right below the mirror but I am hesistant to splice off of the wires going into the mirror because a) I dont have a volt meter and b) i don't want to mess up my onstar. Any advice would be wonderful.

I don't have on-star but I have been hardwiring radar dectors for years.

 

They draw such small amounts of current I just tap off of the fuse box or another circut that is 'hot' when the key is on and run a small guage wire up behind the pillar and under the headliner.

 

Be sure to fuse your new run (smallest amp fuse you can use) and use a good ground. Why mess with the factory wiring.

Mine is mounted right above the rear view mirror. Just run the cord just inside the front of the headliner, down the pillar and under the dash.

 

Locate an ignition-only hot lead with a test light and splice into that. Hook up a ground and you are good to go

I actually ended up splicing from behind my cig. lighter and running through the dash up the pillar accross the headliner, and down below my window. I did this because I am going to wire in a switich so that i can turn off my radar and one of the cig. lighters when the truck is turned off.

I just spliced into my over head console map light. It works just fine and has been for years. Same thing with the wifes Venture. It didn't mess with mine or her Onstar. Matter of fact the lights go out automatically after you open the door with the ignition off. I noticed that when I stayed in the truck while she ran an into a store for a quick item exchange, the power to the detector was turned off with the rest of the electronics like the radio and such in 20min. That is the neat feature to it. You don't have to have the key on to listen to the radio but they you only have a limited time as well. But once you open the door it turns off. Not to mention the automatic run down feature the truck has takes care of it as well if you did wire it up to a hot wire. At least the is my understanding. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The detector fits perfect right above the rearview mirror. The higher the better and it is hidden by the tint.

Hey guys,

 

I have a problem you might be able to help with. I'm trying to wire in another cigarette ligher adapter as suggested...I've done it many time on other vehicles, but I'm having problems doing it with my 2007 GMC. In the past, I wire the positive to a fuse on a circuit that turns off with the ignition, then ground it to nearby metal. It's always worked.

 

But the problem is that ALL the fuses in my fusebox have constant power, even with the ignition off! I started by just trying to tie in to the rear wiper (it obviously doesn't run when the vehicle is off. But low and behold - power - even with the key out. Then I tested every fuse position with a multimeter - and same deal - they all provide constant power.

 

Now I know my vehicle has that deal where the radio and windows will work until you open a door. But I was sure to open/close the doors just in case (to make sure everything was really off), and of course, was trying circuits like the wipers.

 

Any ideas? At this point I'm lost. There's 1000 wires in there and I really don't want to tap into one of them - plus, I wouldn't even know how to find one with power-off with ignition off.

Great little company and service with really reasonable prices. I bought from them.

 

However...I was a little put-off when I discovered that I could have built the same cord with stuff I had in my garage. It's only phone cord.

Your right but my time is worth more than $15. That's what I paid for. I didn't have to go find the little pins or find the d**n crimp tool. Besides, I just spent $400 for the detector and mount. Another $15 didn't matter.

I just tapped into the power running to the Rear view mirror with no ill effects, and as stated the radar detector turned on and off along with rest of the electronics. I can't remeber which one in the power and ground but I just bougt a new truck so I will be doing it Real soon.

I hard wired my radar detector. With a test light I found that the Yellow was hot and black was ground, This is turned on and off with the key. All installed ready to go, now I can really test out that westers tune
