Did you just pull on the shift lever to get it out of park, and now it doesn't seem to be in the matching gear anymore?

You may have damaged/broken the shift cable.

Yeah I ended up having to push it while someone pulled on it to get out of gear but that’s exactly what it’s doing. My grandfather said he figured that what the problem may be I’ll look at that tm. Thanks for the help.

It's also possible you've busted/bent parts inside the transmission.  I think (but I'm not sure), the black plastic unit/controller on the side of the 4l80e where the rod that the shift cable connects to goes through, is what electronically tracks what gear you are in, and then inside the 4l80e, the rod moves various valves and releases/engages the parking pawl.  If the actual gear doesn't match the electronic gear, that kind of indicates it may be the mechanism inside the 4l80e doesn't match the orientation of that rod going through that black plastic controller.

If the cable is not broken is there anyway to adjust it to get the shifter back in sync with the transmission or am I pretty much just going have to replace it?

It depends on what exactly is wrong.  IIRC, the shifting bits are all accessible from the bottom of the transmission, after removing the pan, but it would take some knowledge to figure out what's fine and what's bent/broken/damaged.

If you want to be up, and it's not the shift cable that's the probelm, and you want to it running quickly/cheaply and doing it yourself, then I would just swap in a used 4l80e (making sure to get a 4x4 version of it if you have 4wd, or a 2wd version if you have 2wd), and that it's '01 or newer.

Or take it to a transmission shop and have them figure out what's up.

Shift lever moves the parking pawl. The valves are controlled electronically with a default setting of 3rd gear. Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) confirms that car is in park or neutral before allowing a start. Some NSS will provide feedback to console on which gear was selected and will tell the computer. Computer controls the resulting gear based on input from nss, speed, rpm, tps.

Car off. Climb underneath and see if the lever, driver side of tranny, moves. If so, cable is broken. You can remove the connecting nut, the lever, and see if the cable pulls out (it shouldn't).

I believe issue is shift linkage on shift cable when I got to looking the springs were rusted to almost dirt and one whole side of the spring had fallen apart so I’m just replacing the cable and hopefully this will fix the problem
