Tick noise at cold start up

Recommended Posts

I have what sounds like some lifters ticking initially when truck is started after sitting for a while. It's a 2014 Silverado 5.3 with 112,000 mi. It just started making the noise a few days ago. It wasn't like it developed over time, it suddenly started making the noise as you can hear in the video,

It last for about 15 seconds and goes away. Oil and filter changed regularly @7,000 mi intervals using mobile 1 full synthetic 0w-20.

Any help would be appreciated.

Time to dig in that bad boy. No mirical fluid change is going to fix that. Sounds like oil isnt pumping throught properly. Lifters is what it sounds like to me. I suggest after you resolve that issue drop your oil change intervrals to 3-5k.

I did multiple oil changes, used sea foam in the oil. Ran 10/40 oil instead of 30. More oil changes. No change to the suburban. No magic cure I have come across

Damn, that's what I was afraid of. AFM delete.  Will installing a programmer to disable afm work or will I have to dig into the engine

How much time do you think I have before more damage occurs

Afm delete bro I did it to mine, 830$ in parts with non afm cam and I found a dude that installed for 500$

Do you have a list of parts?

Or maybe just trade it in, lol

So it was the non afm cam, LS7 lifters 16, 2 lifter trays, 8 oil blockers, 20 head bolts (19silver 1black), both head gaskets I think that’s it, mine ran good even tho it was making that ticking noise it’s when I push it to the limit “Racing” when it actually collapsed and started misfiring

Shit you should be ok as long as your truck doesn’t start misfiring, when my lifter collapsed you could tell because it start running like shit and the lifter wasn’t ticking anymore worse feeling ever

Also had to do a tune to turn afm off, as i

drove it like that and it messed up the catalytic converter so I swapped the whole Y-pipe from a 2018 Sierra for 250$ used since I didn’t know which one was messed up,

I've rebuilt plenty old school chevy V8's in my days, so I think I can tackle this job, however I wont have any time to dig into it until about 3 weeks. I'll baby it until then.

Looks like it will almost be easier to pull the engine to do the work.

Thanks for the replies and information.

Yeah I think they had to take all the front end “radiator and condenser” off to do the cam swap on mine, yeah probably would help doing labor yourself also spent another 100$ on fluids oil/antifreeze.

as soon as my lifter collapsed I just drove it home bout 5min in limp mode misfiring then parked it for a month til I got it fixed, now it’s A1 kinda glad it messed up because now I don’t have to worry about the famous collapsed lifter situation again

For the hell of it check all your exhaust manifold bolts. If one it backing off or broke off/missing it could be that.

Otherwise it's a lifter not pumping up right away, drive it until something happens.

So, I'm about to get into the AFM delete. After it's done I will have to turn off the AFM with a tuner. The question is, will the tuner also disable the codes that are associated with the delete kit? Or will I have to sent out the ECU to have them disabled.
