I’ve also replaced the temperature sensor which I thought fixed it but it came back shortly after. I have not replaced the thermostat because no signs point to it being that (the temp gauge will just drop to the bottom while driving and the fan kicks up to high speed). When I take the negative side off the battery for a minute to reset it, it will read perfectly fine and temperature climbs as it should...until it all happens again.

This seems to be the same scenario a lot of people are going through so surely someone has solved this by now.

I've been dealing with the same issue for about a year. I replaced the coolant temperature sensor and it was okay for a bit. It always seems to happen in colder ambient temperatures. I can connect my OBD scanner, and clear it, and they shut off. Based on this, I have to think it's something electrical. I haven't found any solutions on this board or others. I will do some more troubleshooting, parts replacing, etc., and update on my findings.

Mine had this same issue, swapped the temp sensor, thermostat and replace my coolant tank since I cracked it when I replaced the battery. (Check coolant level it’ll come on if it’s alil low)

You know what bro now I am thinking about it...

 

Last week I put orange coolant in because it was low. Probably was low for a bit. That said I remember the original stuff was green. Idk if the two are compatible. Either way I ill check I to that. I need to see if there is a coolant level sensor as well.

Let me know if you find anything. I'm also running the orange but doesn't seem like that should matter for this but who freakin knows.lol I haven't messed with mine in awhile and just said F it at this point.

Well s@#! I guess I figured part of my issue!. I will have to flush the system asap!. 

 

That said the engine was warm to the touch so atleast I know nothings super clogged yet.

Yeah that may be an issue for what you've got going on but my temp gauge is just dropping to 0 and then the fans kick into override (like they're designed to do when it doesn't have a reading). But I've already replaced the temp sensor so idk what's causing it to do that.

 

I don't think I I've mixed my colors since having it, it just had the orange when I got it.

Gotcha. I will do a bit of research and report my findings.  I'll pickup the t stat and some stuff as part of the flush.

2014 4.3L 140,000MI …just started having this issue the last two mornings driving home from work. I disconnected the negative terminal to shut the fan off because I was worried about killing my battery, but didn’t try to restart the truck for hours. I noticed my coolant was low, so after the engine cooled down I added some to get it to the cold level marker located on the reservoir. Drove it around for 20 minutes, Let it sit for an hour or so, then took my 40 min drive to work (both highway and city driving) with no issues. Then on my drive home in the morning the issue started again. Disconnected the negative terminal once I got home, reconnected after a couple minutes again, but this time I started the truck immediately, and the issue was gone again. 
 

Has anybody come up with a solution yet? I’m going to check out wiring and replace the ET sensor when I get up this afternoon, but after reading this thread I’m not feeling very optimistic about that fixing the issue.

Did you check the coolant level again? If coolant temps are normal I would suspect the fan relay may be sticking. Try unplugging the relay instead of disconnecting the battery

Hey guys I have an update.  After I had my transmission rebuilt the fans no longer run full blast non stop.  It's been a few weeks or so now.  I changed the t stat and repaired my ac. Nether of those had an affect on the fans running. Transmission temps never got past the norm. Pump failed due to the tq convertor.

sorry, I forgot to mention that my coolant temp gauge also suddenly drops to the lowest point when this all starts happening. Once I do the battery disconnect and the fan problem is fixed, the temp gauge reads correctly also.
