Thinking about helping the economy.

Looking to hear others thoughts. Found a 2004 D/A Crew Long Bed 4wd LT. Loaded to the hilt, sticker of 47,000. Did the old GM Buy Power get the best price thing and the stealer came back in at 38K and some change. Thoughts? They are willing to take my trade and dig me out of it. so the out the door cost to me would be 43K and some change(this is because I owe more on the truck then it is worth). BTW I have 2002 Chevy 1500HD LT with 31,000 miles on it. Any thoughts???? Please someone talk me out of it.

if you do the the d/a buy gap insurance incase something happens. it will take you 3-4 yrs before your be able to dig yourself out of the d/a with your monthly payments and if you go in with negative equity. you may want to consider putting some $$$ down as well.

I would'nt worry about the Duramax digging your hole deeper. It will add 60-65 bucks a month to your payment. If you drive more than 1500 miles a month you'll save that in fuel alone. The 8.1 is cheaper up front after 40,000 miles your initial saving is thrown to the wind. From that point forward you will be nickel and dimed at the pump and have a truck worth up to 5-6k less when you get rid of it.

If you don't really need a heavy duty work truck just keep what you have for a couple more years until your in a better position on the trade value vs payoff.

Do you really owe more on the 1500HD than its worth, or just more than a dealer offered you for it. I've never had a dealer make me an offer within $5,000 of what I think I can get selling it myself.

Do you not remember a thread I posted a while back comparing value of a D-Max as a percentage of it's original price and the value of an 8.1 as a percentage of it's original price? IF so, you'll remember that both were fairly close.

Yea, an 8.1 will be 5-6k less later because you paid 5-6k LESS up front.

I don't care to re-type all the info I stated a while back. The long and the short of it for me is I payed less than 4k for the Dmax upgrade. At 100,000 miles if I trade or sell the truck I will get 5-6k more than a gasser.Add in the 6-8k I saved in fuel,(CMNT you seem to forget this fact )and I'm way ahead with a quicker and more powerful truck to boot.Again buy what you want obviously it's your money.I just have to post some facts to dispel the myth that the Dmax is a waste of money that's all.The gasser is far more expensive to buy and operate when all cost to 100,000 miles are calculated.I know some people don't like diesels for various reasons and that's cool with me afterall it American and we get what we want. The Dmax is more expensive crap is just that B.S.The numbers don't lie.If I pay 4k for something and 100,000 miles later it's worth 6k more than a gasser my math say's Im 2k ahead.Add in a 6-8k fuel saving and I see a 8-10 k difference in my favor. Please enlighten me if my formula is incorrect.

No, I haven't forgotten. Because I think someone here did an analysis of that also. I think it was around 4 - 5 years to break even with the additional fuel savings the diesel provides.

You diesel guys seem to think the difference in MPG's is as if you guys are mustering 30mpg and us 10. It's more like you guys get 16 and we get around 10. Not a big earth shattering difference.

In 4-5 years, I may not have this truck, so investing that isn't worth it to me. Simple economies of scale tell me though that if you pay more upfront, you'll get more at resale.

When towing, the DMAX gets 12 and the 8.1 still gets 10. Hardly any difference when towing.

ARE422DP, if you are towing as much as you say you are, you are not saving any money in fuel economy. Not to mention the extra wear and tear you are getting. Your truck wont be worth what you think it will after you are done beating it.

Look, if you're in the hole with the 02' 1500HD, getting a new truck isn't going to help you. Maybe you should keep your truck and make larger payments to help get out from under it. If you just hate the truck (???) and feel you really need something bigger and newer, go for it. But remember your just going to be upside down in another truck. It happends to many people who buy new vehicles. You loose so much value when you drive it off the lot that it's almost not worth it! Luckily I had a 00' ext Sierra to trade in, a large some of cash that I had been saving and a supplier discount. This kept me out of the hole. You should do what you want, get a new truck if you feel the need.

Simple fact. New vehicles are the WORST investment of money .... PERIOD!

I learned my lesson with new vehicles, and it will not happen again. As I have heard many times, when buying a new vehicle you are paying "Stuid Tax". Buy one that is a year or two older, and you come out way ahead of the game. Invest that money you were going to spend to have a "New" vehicle. I would live with what you got.

Some people like having complete 3yr/36k (or more) warranty's, a car with 0 miles and no B.S. too!

I agree it's not a wise investment, but any vehicle isn't an "investment" per se. IF you're buying vehicles as an investment, then you need your head examined. I buy them cause it's my hobby and I enjoy them new or used.

Almost had a regular cab 3500 dually around that 87 vintage, but it was when I was in school and mom called the guy selling it before I could work on talking to the guy. That would've been a nice ride, just not fuel efficient.

I think most here buy their rides to enjoy and use, regardless of the age or cost differences.
