Just some engine info

Well, in reading the trade rags at work today, came across an article on the upcoming 3-valve OHV GMC V-6's and 8's. This is from Wards:

1. Launch of the new 3-valve architecture would come after the new GEN IV engine launch some time next year (2004).

2. This would be for the V-6's and V-8's.

3. GMC will begin "wide deployment" of the DOD (disp on demand) technology later this year.

4. 3-valve engines will likely be upgrade engines (esp with the V-6). May also be used to "differentiate between brands".

5. "3-valve is the way of the future"...but "there are some surprises in store for the 2-valve (SBC) engines. We are not talking about 10-15 hp either. Our goal is to remain the leader in truck powerplants."

The quotes are from Alan Hayman, mgr advanced powertrain unit at GM.

Just some info.... Competition is a gooood thing.

I'm glad Ford and Dodge got a jump on Chevy, as Chevy is never the one to begin a power race........look at the mustang, for example(the first vettes were weak, they didn't start the pavement pounding until Ford was threatening them with the T-Bird). I'm hoping thenext base truck engines (top offering) have a minimum of 235HP. 250 would be the best bet though, so Dodge can shove their Hemi ad's.

This is old news. As to GM Powertrain being the last, I think you're a little misinformed Snake. GM has been working on these things since the early/mid 90's. One thing that GM Powertrain has been working on that wasn't mentioned here and that I've only seen Ferrari and some others try is solenoid actuated valvetrains. Ford and Dodge haven't even gotten there yet.

There's another trick GM concept running around that has a universal chassis, with different body's and software. If one day you want an SUV, plug in the SUV software and put the SUV body on the chassis and you're good to go. IF the next you want a performance car, put in the performance car software and the sleek body.

But GM is behind.
