Exhaust Fumes in Cab

New to the Diesel world, but today believe I was in Re-Gen mode for the first time. Fumes were very bad inside cab of truck. Anyone else have this issue or maybe know a cause? Truck just hit 550 miles.

Some of them seem to be burning off grease/oil/overspray/whatever during the first one or two regens. 

 

If it continues get it looked at, as it could be an exhaust leak.

I agree with redwngr it should get better after a couple of regens

I have a 2022 GMC Duramax 2500 HD.  has about 1,100 miles on it. Having the same issue.  Notice at stoplights idling Diesel exhaust smell thru the air vents, so I'm required to change the climate system to recirculate inside air .vs outside air.

It's not in regen mode when this happens.  Does not smell like burning off of solvents or new motor, just Diesel fumes. Think I'll visit the dealer in hopes they will look at this.  My 2008 2500 Duramax had the same issue at 56K miles. It was the (factory  deformed) clamp at the output of the turbo to the down pipe.

I have worked on older diesels that had fuel leaks under the hood. The owner complained about diesel smell when the truck was stopped at stop lights. The fuel leaks were small, and dripped onto the top of the hot motor, and evaporated. Then the fumes get sucked into the cabin. When driving, the fumes would get blown away by the wind. I would start by putting the HVAC on recycle, and see if the problem is only present when the vehicle is stopped.

 

One thing you could try would be to drive the truck so that its thoroughly warmed up, and open the hood and see if the smell is present. Ideally without any electric fans being on.

Thanks for that information will give those diagnostics a try.  I have put the Climate System in Recirculate and the smell stops.  Never thought about a fuel leak !  should though with only 1,100 miles on it

When I install a new motor in a vehicle (like they do in the GM factory), the first thing I do is start the engine for 20 seconds, and then shut it down. Then I start looking around for leaks. After I fix the leaks, I start the engine and run it for a few minutes. And then I shut it off and check for leaks. Leaks, check engine lights from disconnected sensors, and other issues are very common during assembly. Its normal. Those little ink dots all over the place on your connections are factory quality control checks, marking that item off as "checked" at a certain stage of assembly/testing. There is a reason that there is a yellow, purple, blue and other color dots - its rechecking for leaks throughout the process. Some leaks sneak past quality control though. Leaks happen right after the vehicle is assembled, and then they happen again at the "expected failure rate" of any given part.

My 2022 Duramax 2500 is at the dealer right now with the same exact problem . 255 miles on the truck and the  fumes at low speed and idling are nauseating .I saw black soot on a sensor on the top of the turbo . 

Is your problem resolved ?

They still have the truck ,I should have an answerer to what's wrong later today . Any one had this problem resolved yet ?

YES! I have fumes in the cab on a regular basis. I have taken it back to the dealer to no avail. There does not seem to be a rhyme or reason, but it has been doing it since new and now has 24,000 miles. I have gotten underneath and there does not seem to be any loose connections. Wondering if it could have something to do with the cab fresh air system. Can not find a TSB. Love to have some help diagnosing the issue.

They did a smoke test and found that the leak was at the back of the Turbo where it bolts to the cat .I had a missing bracket  and a bad Gasket right from the factory . The mechanic working on mine went to the turbo diagram and found that the bracket was missing . It took a week to get the truck back . Odor completely gone. Hope this helps .

All of the semi's I have driven for the last 10-12 yrs have all had fumes in the cab during regen.  I never did get any answers as to how OSHA could allow this to continue, due to safety concerns.
