Does it have a thermostat? If the answer is yes then yes it's 'normal'. If it does not have a thermostat then no, it's not normal.

Is 190 to 200 F optimal. Depends. If efficiency is your goal then yes. If longevity and reliability are the goal, then no.

Only the OP can answer any of that. He has to look and then decide what is more important to him. Fuel or reliability.

Then give this a try before you commit to a rebuild. If the fluid still looks nice and clean and pink. Flip the pill in the thermostat and add a bottle of Lubegard Red. You'll know in about a hour. Minutes maybe. IF the fluid is anything but...the draw a measured amount of fluid from the dipstick and in like volume replace. Drive 50 miles and repeat. Do this four to six times or until the fluid looks good again. Then add the Lubegard and do the pill flip.

If none of that works then you might very well have some mechanical damage. Then would be the time to commit. IF so might I be so bold as to suggest a GM Remanufactured instead of a francize trans shop. Rebuilders replace clutches and seals. GM Reman's are back to blueprint specs and have a real warranty.
