IS IT BETTER TO DROP THE TRANNY PAN AND CHANGE THE FILTER OR LET THE MECHANIC SUCK OUT ALL THE FLUID AND ALSO DROP THE PAN TO CHANGE THE FILTER.

Save the money and just drain and drop the pan yourself and R2 the filter, clean off the magnet, and pan and reinstall it. Then just refill your transmission with fresh fluid.

 

If you want to and have the cash you can fill back up with synthetic. It will not hurt a thing and can help when and if you do any towing or hualing.

Not worth the hassle of worring, I always replace the gaskets. They are not that expensive. At least the ones I buy for my vehicles are not, now I would bet to say that some could be expensive and even so I would change them out. Just doesn't seem right to reuse something that could fail later on.

I just spoke with my mechanic today regarding a full flush vs. just dropping the pan and changing the filter then refilling. He said it depends on how the fluid looks. When you pull the dipstick and wipe it, if you see any black particles in the fluid it's better to flush the entire system.

 

I changed my fluid ~15k miles ago, and I do have some type of particles in the fluid on the dipstick, but I'm torn between doing it myself or paying the $120 for the full flush.

 

I'm leaning towards just changing it myself and possibly using synthetic since we have been starting to tow lately.

 

Any extra input here would be great!

I would just change it myself. If you feel that it has contamination you can change it and the filter, run it for 3k and change it again. If you figure at that interval you will have fresh fluid in the entire system in 3 to 4 changes. You also could get by with just the fluid change, by pulling the drain plug if you have one, if not put one in. It is really simple to do and saves a mess on dropping the pan. So you would do a filter change the first to second change and then just fluid after that for one to two more, just depends on how far you want to go.

 

This would still be cheaper and you have fresh fluid in it longer especially if you tow. Once your done then you can relax for longer mileage and then just R2 the filter and fluid at 30k mile incraments.
