Make him pay for it. I Bet he will not hit it a second time. They load pellets of tile. Mortar and often lumber and never damage nothing on my Trucks or  Vans. My thinking is personal responsibility. Tell them they hit it they buy it , if they do not like the ideal let them load it by hand.

Sorry to sound mean but its not that difficult.

but getting a metal grill type tailgate might be the best answer , Like the ones for 5th wheel hitch

PLEASE BE CAREFUL right before they load usually works for me but i dont have to do it daily or even weekly.......heck even guys that work for me dont give a ****** sometimes loading tools.....I told them you pay for it if you mess it up.........MONEY is universal and everyone understands that very clear!.....

Fabricate a trailer hitch that extends just past the lowered tailgate.

They will hit the trailer hitch and stop before hitting the tailgate.

Warning: remove it if you are not picking up a pallet. It's a knee knocker.

Drove forklifts for years and now manage a fleet of operators.

If you stand there and assess the situation while they load you’ll prevent most issues.  Operators will notice the attention and try to not F up.

It’s your product and your vehicle. You have the right to stop whatever’s going on.
