Question about oil

Well Peoples,

I have a simple question or two. I now have about 500 miles on my new truck. Plan on doing the first oil change at around 1500 miles, and every 5k thereafter. But when should I transition to Mobil 1. I was thinking arount 7500k. Is that too soon.? Also I don't see a problem running the Mobil 1 in the Duramax, but as this is my first diesel, and I know zero about them, it is ok?

I would guess that 3,000 would be ok for a switch over rather than 7500. These motors are not really green from the factory. Indeed, my dealer has ALL of his new vehicles ordered with Mobil 1 from General Motors. That is one of his advertisements...

Can't answer about the Duramax, though. I know the oil in our diesel tractor is rated for diesels so you definitely need to find that out.

I myself would wait till 7500. I just feel better about getting a good breakin before I start with synthetic. Plus if you change the oil out a few times you also get rid of any breakin where material that might still be hanging around inside the engine before you start with a synthetic.

You want to run a good quality Diesel grade oil in your DMax. Delvac 1 5w-40 is the Mobil 1 equivilant for diesels as far as synthetics go. You also have Shell Rotella T 5w-40 synthetic, which is a group III synthetic. This is a good oil but personnally I would use the Delvac 1 or AMSOIL AME 15w-40 or their Series 3000 HDD 5w-30 synthetic, since these are a true group IV PAO oil.

Shell Rotella, and Delvac 1300 are regular based oils that are good quality stocks. If you were not looking at running a synthetic.

Mobil 1 doesn't have the soot control and AW additive package that is needed in an diesel engine. So that is why it isn't recommended in diesel engines. Delvac 1300 or the full synth Delvac 1 5W40 would be better.

You can learn and read up on a ton of information on lubricants at bobistheoilguy.com

At that site you can even review others used oil analysis (UOA). Give this site a review.

IIRC, Mobil 1 is not for diesels -- it's for gas engines only. You might want to heed the advice of the previous post and check out those other oils instead.

I changed my oil at 1K, 3K and then at 5K switched to M1. I change the oil every 5K now, using M1.

Thanx. Great info.

Which do you think is better, Delvac 1 or AMSOIL AME 15w-40. I live in Socal where the temps are relitively mild all year long. and where can I purchase this stuff.

Don't run Mobil 1 in your DuraMax. (In fact, don't even run it in your lawnmower. Over-rated, over-hyped, over-marketed, and over-priced.)

It depends on who you talk to. I like the AME.

I think they are both good oils. I would go with which ever one is easiest to get as well as least in price. Not sure on the Delvac 1 cost since around here I only have seen it at truck stops.

As for the AMSOIL AME 15w-40 it is $20.50 a gallon retail and if your a preferred customer it's wholesale price is $15.75 a gallon.

Or if you use qts retail is $5.20 and wholesale $4.00 qt.

I run the AME in our boat. I like the added protection during off season storage.

Where's that coming from?? Mobil 1 is an excellent product.
