Got a late year 1999 silverado z71 .. never had a slip or any problems with the transmission ... Jump in the truck, went a mile to the store....come back out  started it ...put it in drive and nothing.... I put it in 4 high and it moves... I drove it a mile to the house in 4 high ...... Any help or ideas before I remove it to get rebuilt and find out it was something simple...thanks

I wouldnt get the trans rebuilt. If it were the trans you wouldnt be able to drive in 4 wheel either.  Did you try putting it back in 2 wheel after you got home?  How did it shift in 4 wheel?  You have reverse? How is the tranny fluid? Do you have push button 4 wheel drive or floor manual shift?  I would expect your problems to be an electrical issue or failed actuator based off what you described. Dumb question but is your drive shaft hooked up in the rear?

Sorry it push button 4 wheel drive and yes the driveshaft is still connected....I got up under it and tried to turn the driveshaft by hand ...it wouldn't turn ....no reverse or forward gears thanks for the reply

Probably either the transfer case linkage and/or the transfer case itself.

When in RWD and put in gear did the speedometer indicate anything?
