This is my son's truck. He drove it to work and after work when he got in to go home, he started the truck, used to gear shift to put it in drive and nothing. The gear shift moved 'freely' and does not click into any of the gears (R-N-D-1-2). It is locked in park like it should be, you have to press on the brake to release the gear shift, but once you do, it is sloppy and goes up and down without entering a gear / snapping into place. Pull the steering column off and it looked good although I may have missed something. I was looking for the shift cable underneath the truck and was unable to locate it.  Any help, ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The truck is currently sitting at his job, the plan is to tow it home tomorrow so I am not able to look at/ view anything tonight.  Thank you.

Look under the driver’s side of the truck and try to reconnect the cable to the side of the transmission.

I am going with my son tomorrow to pick up the truck. I will try both of these suggestions. Thank you both for taking time to respond and give me a starting point. I appreciate your help. Thanks you.

Hello Bubbanbrenda AND CAMGTP-  I went back to the truck and it was the shift lever on the side of the tranny case that had popped off. The plastic snap ring that holds it in place looks a bit worn. I was able to snap it in place so I could start and drive the truck home. At least at home, I can dig deeper into the issue and hopefully find a easy solution. Again, thanks for your suggestions and guidance.
