Is there a quick and easy way, or does the battery have to be disconnected?

Really? 

Quick and easy means poor quality. 

Get a battery post cleaner tool and dielectric grease. Remove cables and clean inside them and the posts. Light coat of dielectric grease.

Thanks, I know the right way. This battery is not so easy to disconnect..

If you just want to clean off the "junk", make a paste with Baking Soda, let it sit, may need to use a toothbrush to scub a bit, then rinse with water. Again, this is just to clean the junk, best to do as diyer2 suggest to avoid problems.

Not sure why I was under the impression it was so difficult to disconnect the positive terminal. One you tube video and I'm good to go
