ducks1992 Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 I know this topic has been posted about a thousand times but I need to ask. If I disable my AFM with a DiabloSport i3 Tuner do I also have to change the camshaft, lifters etc etc? I am worried about damaging my engine as this truck is very special to me. Thank you everyone in advance.
M1ck3y Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 No, you don't have to change anything physical. The programmer re-programs the ecu, telling it not to engage afm. From then on it will stay in v8 full time.

Also I have a K&N aftermarket intake pipe and filter installed. Will that affect anything?

ducks1992 Posted December 23, 2021 Author Posted December 23, 2021 Perfect. Thank you so much for the help!

After 3 or 4 months, my oil catch can is dry.
Supreme Pizza Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 Agreed, all that you need to do is program the computer not to use AFM anymore. That alone will greatly reduce the likelihood of lifter failure. If you want to take it a step further, you can pull the valley cover, and drive a metal plug down into the oil pathway that supplies oil to the VLOOM, and then cut sections of the gasket out of the oil pathways between the VLOOM and the head. That will insure that oil pressure doesn't build up in that area (from the opposite direction) and trigger a lifter pin to get jammed in the wrong spot, causing a collapsed AFM lifter. I did all of these steps on mine when I replaced #7 AFM intake lifter. Note, the VLOOM can not be removed from the engine, and you want to leave it plugged in as well - even though its not in use anymore.
Supreme Pizza Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 For the catch can, its probably not needed, unless you have a lot of blow-by, or the older style valve cover that gets plugged up on the oil return pathways.
ducks1992 Posted December 23, 2021 Author Posted December 23, 2021 Awesome info here guys. Thank you. What other mods do y’all recommend for a 2014 Silverado 5.3? Any other common problems on these?
Supreme Pizza Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 I do the AFM delete, as listed above. I also put on Wheel spacers, and lift spacers. I always add a cattle guard and rain gutters. Gotta have the backup cam and in dash DVD of course. I have a hidden kill switch to prevent theft. I also rewire the power outlets so they turn off with the key. And so on...

I have installed them on every rig I have owned for the last.... 30+ years. I install them on other people's rigs too. It really depends on your personal preference and the amount of time you want to spend installing it. All you have to do, is make it very convenient and easy for you to operate, and "not obvious" to the car thief. Basically you "break" the truck. So even with the keys it wont start. As long as the thief doesn't find the kill switch, then they would need to use a tow truck to steal the rig. Disguise it as an OEM fog light switch, or a switch under the seat. You can put them under the sun visor mirror cover, or in the glove box. Next to the seat, under the dash, or it can be done with a remote control using a relay. You can tap into the fuel pump, ECU, starter, etc. The most famous bank robbery in Hollywood was foiled by a hidden fuel pump kill switch on some old crappy pickup truck. One of the robbers tried to car-jack a truck during the escape. The driver said no problem, take it - and he flipped the fuel pump kill switch off on his way out of the rig. That robber got caught. After suffering a leg injury from police gunshots, the other guy blew his own brains out with a 9mm before capture. 2

Out of curiosity, what year is your current truck? The K2's are pretty easy to do that "mod", you just move a 50-amp fuse one spot.

I don't think moving the fuse is an option on my rigm but it might be. What do your sources indicate?
