Have a 2017 sierra 4wd. Pulled the tarns pan to change fluid and filter because I had a shudder. Pan was full of metal. So I took the pan to a shop and they are saying I need a new torque converter and to rebuild the trans because it most likely ate up the pump. Does this sound right or is it just a shop trying to get over on me ?

How many miles? 6 speed?

Sounds correct. The torque converter is the weak point on these 6 speeds. I would recommend going to the 6L90 torque converter. Here's  a good info link

94,000 miles and yes 6l80. He says there are upgrades he will do while rebuilding it. Like billet torque converter and doing away with the thermal bypass

Yes, take their advice about the thermal bypass. Make this transmission run cooler like the old 4 speed autos did. That was the first thing I did when I bought my '17 & well as the Range AFM delete.

Your miles sound about right from what I see & read on the internet. I'm curious on what their cost is for this.

I got it rebuilt with everything changed that’s known to be a problem. I was getting 16.2 right after I got it back. It’s back up around 18.3 now. I just replaced the vacuum pump
