Tire air pressure when towing ...

Happy 4Th of July to everyone,

Question on Tire Air Pressure when towing a travel trailer.

My 2021 Silverado 2500HD crew cab with the Duramax Diesel calls for 60 psi in the front tires and 70 psi in the rear. I am running the factory Michelin AT2 tires.

My travel trailer has a GVWR of 8,400 lbs when towing and I'm running factory installed Goodyear Endurance tires at 80 psi per the label on the side of my trailer.

I live in southern Arizona and tow when the temperature is hot, 100 to 110 degrees.

Towing when the air temperature is 100 to 110 degrees is it recommended to keep the tires psi at the manufacturers settings or because of the extreme heat build up is it safe to deflate the tires 5 lbs or so to eliminate /reduce air pressure build up ?

I monitor the truck and trailer tire air pressure when driving and am wondering what is the safest tire psi when towing in extreme heat.

Inflate the tires to recommended value at as close to 70 degrees ambient temp as possible, and you should be good.  I thought the same thing here in AZ when seeing my pressures get super high, but have been told that more pressure is better than less when it's hot.  Sidewall flex is what kills tires so keep them aired up and firm when it's hot out.

Inflation pressure labels are typically listed as 'cold' - I can't remember the exact definition of that but in simple terms I set the pressure in the morning prior to driving any where. The 'coldest' temperature of the season.

 

You are monitoring the pressures too - I've never seen more than a 5 PSI rise from 'cold' to 'hot'.

"Cold" is such a very cruel thing for tire pressures.  I have the Goodyears on our camper, so when it's 75' in the morning, I set them to 70psi.  When traveling they get to around 101 temps and around 78psi when it's 90 plus degrees out.  I will say this though, any lower, like when I picked our camper up brand new and the tires were at 65 psi cold, the camper did sway a lot more.  Now that I set them at 70 "cold", totally solved that problem.

I have a 2021 3500 with the same tires and the recommended cold rear tire pressure for full load (7250 RGAWR) is 80 psi, so you have some margin.
