I tuned my 2014 Silverado in 2016-2017.  I never fully understood the software, there are classes for it.  But made some changes based on what I read.

I shortened shift times, reduced torque management and I believe some engine timing from a posted corvette tune.

 

It was okay for a while, sometimes a glitch and on the edge as far as knocking.

Now it's hot weather and more frequent problems but also in the sold some bit.

At part throttle it will surge, kind of hunts between gears, then will throw a flashing engine light.

My notebook computer was stolen years ago and lost the software.  Just bought it again, have my original and new tunes.

Will put it back to original and then need to tune again.

 

First question, is anyone experienced here with tuning the 6.2L engine with the 6 speed, that combo was only offered for a year or two, then 8 speed.

It was far from optimal stock, the torque management I was convinced I had the 5.3 liter motor. The point of the bigger motor was torque to tow.

I have since sold my trailer so I don't tow but still for acceleration reducing the torque management probably reduced 0-60 mph by a full second.

 

I have seen some stuff about changing out the thermal bypass/management valve on this transmission. I know I need a fluid change and am guessing it is in the pan, want to get is done at the same time.

Are there some shops in the Los Angeles area that other members here can recommend to do that work.

 

Even with the tuning I did the shifts are nothing like my E92 M3 DCT. That trans is stock with the GTS software, chirps 2nd and 3rd gear every time, downshifts quickly when in auto mode and I hit the gas.  The mapping on that car got better over the years as BMW kept refining it.  GM doesn't seem to do that.

Is is possible to get quick hard shifts under full throttle, enough to chirp the back tires in 2 wheel drive?  A have 4 wheel drive and there are different profiles to program.

I've tuned many trucks with that transmission. I can't change your tune for you as I don't have the newest software that allows me to edit your tune. The most I can do it look at your current tune and post up a tune from another truck that you can use the compare feature with, then you could copy over the changes to your tune and save it.

 

Chirping the tires really comes down to what tires you have on the truck, the weight of the truck and the surface the truck is driving on. Some really cheap tires that don't grip the ground that good and some nice smooth asphalt or concrete can make the tires chirp. But you have to remember that a harsh shift into say 2nd gear is kind of a big shock to parts. To aggressive and you can break things inside the transmission on a 5,500lbs crew cab truck.

IMO, put the stock file back in first and make sure that on the stock tune your truck is mechanically sound and there are no check engine lights, messed up shifting or any of the other issues you are currently having, and then from there, make a new tune for it.  

 

Tire chirps on shifts don't equal fast so I wouldn't be worried about that.  The guy who did my 5.3 did some mild torque management massaging (you do NOT want to get rid of all of it) turned on the flex fuel (I installed the sensor ahead of time) and some light timing tweaks.  Set it up for 93 and E85 (tuned with active alcohol content of 70%).  He also then bumped the shift pressures, I think line pressure a hair and if I remember did either shift timing or something else related to shifts?  It definitely shifted faster than stock and much more crisp.  

 

Thermal bypass is external to the transmission.  Don't even bother with the GM updated valve, go right for the pill flip or SureCool delete kit since you are going for more of a performance route.

I have head,cam, forged pistons plus all the bolt-ons in the that combo.  It's will blow the tires off 1-2.  But it won't chirp the tires like my wifes Scat Pack or her old SRT8.  Once it looses traction it's gone and the tires just start spinning.  I set the trans to shift harder at one point but in the 6l80e it just feels like it's going to break sometime.

    • The BORA 3/8" spacers arrived yesterday along with the extended lug nuts. I got the front wheels changed out today, but was overheated and covered in sweat so bad, I figured getting both front wheels done was a win, and took a cool shower. Hopefully, I'll go out tomorrow morning before it gets into the 80+ temps and do the backs. After getting the first wheel snugged up, I backed out one of the lug nuts then hand turned to count threads. I believe I stopped counting around 12-13, so I think I'm good there.    
    • My fullsize truck is averaging over 26mpg so I'm pretty happy with the increased fuel economy targets. When I had my gas Silverado (2020 5.3) it was averaging 21. Again, for a fullsize truck, that's very different from the 12-15 these things used to get 30 years ago.   Whine all you want, increased MPG is a good thing.
    • That is a fair point, and I think an OBD-first proof is probably the right next step. I agree that the value is not the hardware box by itself. The marketable part would be the software: always-on capture, baseline learning, event reduction, system-specific reports, and alerts. Also agreed that if an OBD device is always plugged in and has local storage, it should not miss the event in the same way that a scanner plugged in after the fact would. The only thing I would not want to assume yet is that an ELM327-class device gives all the late-GM data needed at the rate needed. Standard OBD live data, DTCs, freeze frame, Mode 6, VIN, and calibration information are definitely the right starting point. GDS2 also proves that a lot of useful ECM data can be viewed through the DLC without needing a DTC first. The question I need to test is whether the data needed for a useful GM V8 event report is actually available through the DLC, and at a useful sample rate: - misfire counts / roughness by cylinder - AFM/DFM state - oil pressure and oil temperature - fuel trims - voltage / reset context - U-codes and communication events - calibration / software information - whether these are standard PIDs, enhanced DIDs, Mode 6 data, GDS2-only data, or not available So I think the right benchmark is: 1. Build the OBD-only version first. 2. Keep it plugged in and logging locally. 3. Compare it against GDS2 / freeze frame / HP Tuners or another higher-end logger. 4. Measure which parameters are available and at what update rate. 5. Only justify ECM-side hardware if it captures useful evidence the OBD version cannot. So you may be right: the consumer product might simply be an always-plugged-in OBD event recorder with much better reporting. A question for you: when you say ELM327 devices can already deliver all the data needed, do you mean generic OBD Mode 01 data only, or GM enhanced data as well? For a useful GM V8 report, would generic OBD data be enough, or would you expect the tool to include enhanced items like misfire by cylinder, AFM/DFM state, oil pressure/oil temp, U-codes, and calibration information?
