AMSOIL's Heavy-Duty Metal Protector works well as an undercoating.  Dries to a wax film.  Several customers use it for that purpose and love it.

Yep, I actually have a can of that. Used it on some of my boat trailer parts. Good stuff.

Some minor updates on the Jeep. No issues, everything working perfectly. After about 700 miles in the sump, the HPL EC appears to be doing its thing. The oil is already darker than I would otherwise expect for such a short time. Not much consumption as far as I can tell. Maybe down one tiny little crosshatch on the dipstick.

Will probably take this interval to the HPL recommended 2k. I don’t suspect the engine is sludged or “clog the filter dirty” inside. Like I said, it was well maintained. Just some basic cleanup from the cheap shelf oil diet.

Here’s 76k mile factory MT oil. “Lubed for life” they are supposed to be. I was really surprised how dark it was. Photo exaggerates it a little but not much. Yikes.IMG_0634.thumb.jpeg.18496a72febaa9e73ecdef8cd834bd9a.jpeg

Went with ~2 quarts Red Line MT-LV. My kingdom for a gear oil pump that actually threads onto their goofy bottles. 😂

Nevertheless got it done. Shifts amazing. Way less effort going first to second. Really impressive difference for just 40 bucks. Can only imagine how much better it’ll be in the cold too. It was damn near 60 today.

I used RL MTL in a 98 Honda 5 speed civic. Transformed the way it shifted. These people have friction packages well sorted. Well played. 😉

I guess we now have an idea what they think "life" expectancy is.

I’ll bet. Honda does great manuals even  before adding the RL sauce. My Accord had perfect shifter feel and was as smooth to drive as an auto.

This Jeep ain’t bad either. Shifter feels really good and Honda-esq. Gearing ain’t quite how I’d set it up though. Have to drop to first on rolling stops, not enough torque for second. And 6th is too deep. Even on the highway you pretty much have to put it to the wood to maintain speed up hill. Definitely a different experience from the TRX.

The Civic 5 with factory fill was full stop to get into low gear. MTL is slid into low at any speed you dared. It too had a second gear too tall for pulling up from near stopped so this was a huge improvement in the driving experience.

Weather has been damn miserable. Thought I had my first failure with the Jeep but it was a failure of the weather more than anything. There’s a skid plate or “cage” around the resonator and rear driveshaft. When we got a foot of wet snow it got packed with heavy slush. And then the day later it was -10. So that stuff froze solid and was generating a really concerning rhythmic knocking noise at certain RPMs. I thought I lost a CV axle or something but it was a combo of the muffler and driveshaft being bound up by the block of ice in there. Took me a couple days to figure that out due to the weather and lack of ambition for it. But a little portable block heater and a pry bar cleared it out no problem. Washed it yesterday but it already assumed the midwestern white topcoat.

Oil change is due. Maybe next week.
